Increased fasting blood sugar

Increased fasting blood sugar

The increase in fasting blood sugar is mainly due to diabetes. At this time, patients should pay attention to their diet, because too high blood sugar concentration will affect the patient's life safety, especially the elderly who often have symptoms of high blood sugar. Increased fasting blood sugar may be caused by hormone secretion. Patients are advised to take medication according to the doctor's advice and pay attention to their diet.

For many diabetic patients, they will almost always face the risk of elevated fasting blood sugar. If the fasting blood sugar value of a diabetic patient exceeds 7mmol/L, it is considered to be above the standard. Fasting blood sugar refers to the blood sugar level measured after the patient has fasted for 8 to 10 hours, usually in the early morning when the patient is in a fasting state. It can directly reflect the patient's insulin secretion and liver glucose output.

So, what is the reason why fasting blood sugar remains high?

1. Dawn phenomenon causes fasting blood sugar to rise

The dawn phenomenon refers to the increase in blood sugar in the morning, which usually occurs between 4 and 8 a.m. When people are about to wake up, the glycogen in the liver will break down into glucose, which will flow into the blood and cause blood sugar to rise. In addition, there are hormones such as nocturnal growth hormone and cortisol, which stimulate blood sugar to rise.

How to prevent it: Try to take blood sugar control medicine before going to bed, not before meals, and don't eat too much high-carbohydrate food before going to bed. You can do some exercises like jogging or walking after dinner. In addition, you should also take medication as prescribed by your doctor.

2. Eating too much for dinner leads to high fasting blood sugar

As the saying goes: eat a good breakfast, eat enough lunch, and eat a good dinner. If you eat too much for dinner or give yourself a large snack before going to bed, it will lead to high blood sugar on an empty stomach the next day.

How to prevent it: Three meals a day have normal energy, especially for patients with hypertension, try to eat on time, do not give yourself extra meals, and do not eat too much at each meal.

3. Somogy phenomenon causes high fasting blood sugar

The Somujie phenomenon refers to the fact that excessive insulin intake by the human body will cause blood sugar to become unstable. If the dosage of insulin is reduced, blood sugar will begin to drop again, which usually manifests as high blood sugar in the early morning or before breakfast.

How to prevent it: Be sure to reduce the amount of insulin before dinner, which will help reduce the incidence of hypoglycemia in the early morning and also restore fasting blood sugar levels to normal.

4. Mental stress and insomnia lead to increased fasting blood sugar

Various life and work pressures lead to emotional tension and anxiety, poor sleep at night, and easy insomnia. In the long run, such negative emotions and insomnia can easily lead to increased blood sugar levels on an empty stomach the next day.

How to prevent it: Adjust your mindset, release stress or negative emotions in time, and develop good sleeping habits.
