Can I use salt water to wash my nose?

Rhinitis is a very common nasal disease. It causes great pain to patients. The main symptoms include nasal congestion and stuffiness, which seriously affects the quality of life of patients. There are many ways to treat this disease. The most common one is nasal washing with saline. However, if this method is not mastered, the effect of treatment will become very unsatisfactory. So can table salt be used for nasal washing with saline?

First, can table salt be used for nasal washing? When washing your nose, you must use saline or physiological saline made from special nasal washing salt. You cannot directly use ordinary table salt instead. The table salt we generally use now contains iodized salt, which is not suitable for use in the nasal cavity. Because the nasal cavity is rich in capillaries, any improper handling can easily cause harm to the human body. Therefore, you must be careful in choosing salt. You can choose special nasal wash salt or non-iodized table salt.

Second, the water used to prepare the saline solution for nasal washing must be purified water or boiled and cooled tap water. It is forbidden to use tap water directly. First, tap water contains bacteria that may infect the nasal cavity. Second, tap water often contains additives that can irritate the nasal cavity. Using tap water will basically aggravate the symptoms of rhinitis, so be sure to pay attention. In addition, the water temperature should not be too high or too low, and should be close to 37 degrees for the human body.

Third, you can use either saline or table salt to wash your nose. If conditions permit, it is best to use pre-mixed sterile saline. If you use refined salt water, a certain amount of purified baking soda may be added to the salt water. Although baking soda can help remove dirt, it can also easily irritate the nasal cavity. In addition, the ratio of salt is difficult to control and it may also contain bacteria.

Can table salt be used for nasal washing with saline? Table salt can be used for nasal washing with saline. However, when using table salt, it must be diluted. Generally, 500 ml of pure water and 4.5 grams of salt are needed to dissolve to make a 0.9% solution. This will allow the saline solution to work without causing damage to the nasal mucosa.
