How to choose watermelon, eight methods to teach you how to choose

Before summer, watermelon is one of people's favorite fruits. Eating a piece of delicious watermelon in the hot summer can both relieve stress and quench thirst. But not every watermelon you buy home is delicious. Some are overripe, some are half ripe, and some are not fresh. Choosing watermelons gives many people a headache. So today I will teach you some tips on how to choose watermelons.

The first step in choosing melons: Look

Mainly look at the color, texture and stem of the melon rind. Generally, the lines are clear, the shades are distinct, and the luster is bright.

As the saying goes, a ripe melon will fall off the vine, so while looking at the grain clearly, take a look at whether the navel is concave. If it is, it is definitely ripe, otherwise give up choosing it.

The second step of choosing melons: touching

When choosing a watermelon, think of yourself as a doctor and the watermelon as your patient. After you finish looking, start touching. Run your palm across the watermelon skin. If the watermelon "skin" feels smooth, then it is a good watermelon. On the contrary, if the surface is astringent or sticky, then say goodbye to it.

The third step of choosing melons: listening

This requires some technical skills, haha, that is to say, after you are familiar with the first two steps, the third step will help you to be more foolproof. First, hold the watermelon in your hand and tap it lightly with your fingers. If a crisp "dong, dong" sound comes out and your hand feels a little trembling, it is a ripe watermelon. If it sounds "thump, thump", it is relatively mature and this kind of watermelon is the first choice if you buy it home and eat it within a few days. If it sounds "puff, puff", it is overripe and you should never buy this kind of watermelon. Sometimes when you cut it open at home, the flesh will be deformed and it will taste like cotton, soft and tasteless. In addition, the melon that makes the "tapping" sound is definitely an unripe melon. Remember, don't bring this kind of melon home.

The fourth step of choosing melons: weighing

In fact, the fourth step can be carried out at the same time as the third step. That is, while holding the watermelon with both hands, you can weigh it. The more mature the watermelon is, the lighter it is. Generally speaking, for watermelons of the same size, lighter ones are better, while heavier ones are unripe.

Step 6 of choosing melons: Try

If you really feel you can't figure it out, don't worry, I'll teach you one more step: that is to try the specific gravity. Put the watermelon you want to choose into the bucket. If it floats, it must be ripe; if it sinks, it is naturally unripe. This trick is simpler, but sometimes the bucket is not convenient when buying watermelons, so it is more practical to master the skill yourself.

The seventh step of melon selection: comparison

Among a pile of watermelons, you can observe the size of the watermelons with your naked eyes and choose the one you like. Generally speaking, among the same variety, large watermelons have better flesh and taste sweeter than small ones.

Step 8 of choosing melons: observation

In fact, this step is different from the first step. Although the Chinese meanings of "看" and "观" are similar, the "观" here mainly refers to looking at the overall shape of the watermelon. Generally, watermelons with neat and symmetrical bodies are growing normally and have good quality; watermelons with deformed bodies are growing abnormally and have poor quality. However, there is a saying among the people that "crooked melons are like cracked dates", which means that watermelons that are more symmetrical are generally sweeter. Of course, this saying has a long history and mostly originated in the past when artificial cultivation was not very high. Nowadays, it is still better to choose more symmetrical watermelons.
