Symptoms and treatments for methanol poisoning

Methanol is a colorless, volatile liquid. I believe many of my friends have encountered people suffering from methanol poisoning in their lives. Severe methanol poisoning can be life-threatening, so everyone must be vigilant. However, many people do not know what causes methanol poisoning. The most common cause of methanol poisoning is drinking fake alcohol. So what are the symptoms of methanol poisoning and what should we do?

Symptoms of methanol poisoning

Symptoms of methanol poisoning are usually not discovered immediately. It has an incubation period of at least 8 hours and at most 36 hours.

When the symptoms of methanol poisoning begin to appear, the first part of the patient's central nervous system is affected, with very obvious symptoms such as headache, dizziness, insomnia and weakness. Patients with slightly more serious conditions may even experience coma, cerebral edema and other symptoms.

As the disease worsens, 2-3 days after poisoning, patients will have severe mental symptoms. They will have hallucinations and become very afraid of people and things around them. Sometimes they are manic, sometimes they are indifferent, they have obvious symptoms of depression, and even their memory will be impaired.

Methanol poisoning can also affect the eyes, causing patients to have significant blurred vision, eye pain, and even flashes in front of their eyes. Examination can diagnose retinitis, retrobulbar neuritis, etc., and severe cases may lead to blindness.

What to do in case of methanol poisoning?

Hemodialysis can be performed after methanol poisoning. Adding some ethanol to the dialysate can relieve the symptoms of methanol poisoning. Because methanol poisoning has obvious symptoms such as abdominal pain and diarrhea, which also need to be relieved, you can take acetazolamide, which is an alkaline drug that can neutralize the acidic substances produced by methanol poisoning. It has an excellent effect on alleviating the symptoms of poisoning and excretes the acidic substances from the body under the action of the drug.

If diarrhea occurs frequently, glucose or saline must be injected intravenously to relieve the dehydration caused by diarrhea, balance the body's electrolytes, and replenish lost nutrients.

Methanol poisoning has an incubation period, so it is difficult to detect in time. Therefore, I still want to remind all friends to drink real wine and not buy fake wine for the sake of cheapness, otherwise it will cause great harm to yourself.
