What are the symptoms of high intraocular pressure?

High intraocular pressure usually manifests itself as bloodshot eyes, especially in patients with glaucoma. Increased intraocular pressure can also cause bloodshot eyes, as well as visual fatigue, narrowed visual field, frequent swelling and pain in the eyes, and hardening of the eyeballs.

1. Eye congestion

Eye congestion is a common eye phenomenon. Glaucoma patients will also experience eye congestion symptoms due to increased intraocular pressure. This type of glaucoma is also called congestive glaucoma.

2. Visual fatigue

Prolonged reading and computer operation can cause symptoms of visual fatigue such as eye pain, dryness, blurred vision, and heavy eyelids.

3. Reduced field of vision

Due to high intraocular pressure, the optic nerve is damaged, which can cause visual field impairment and a black area in the field of vision that cannot be seen.

4. Eye swelling and pain

At night, my eye sockets feel a little swollen and there is a pain in the brow ridge. Sometimes, my eyes become swollen, painful and sensitive due to reading for too long.

5. Headache

Due to the sharp increase in intraocular pressure, the endings of the trigeminal nerve are stimulated, which reflexively causes pain in the trigeminal nerve distribution area. Glaucoma patients often feel migraines.

6. Nausea and vomiting

Increased intraocular pressure can also reflexively cause excitement of the vagus nerve and vomiting nerve center, resulting in severe nausea and vomiting, which is also a symptom of high intraocular pressure in glaucoma.

7. Eyeballs become hard

Measured by a Schutz tonometer, the normal intraocular pressure range is 10-21 mmHg. The eyeball is elastic when touched with a finger. When the intraocular pressure rises to 25-40 mmHg, the eyeball feels hard like an inflated ball when touched with a finger. When it rises to 40-70 mmHg, the eyeball will feel as hard as stone when pressed with your fingers.
