How to treat itching in the ears? Experts answer your questions

Everyone will experience itchy ears. Although itchy ears are not a serious disease, if it happens frequently it will make people upset. In severe cases, some inappropriate solutions may be used, which may have disastrous consequences. It is crucial to understand the treatment methods.

1. Dip a cotton swab in a little alcohol and gently wipe the external auditory canal. It not only relieves itching, but also effectively kills bacteria and reduces inflammation. Alcohol is very volatile and will quickly dry up and return to normal. Histamine is the main culprit causing urticaria itching, so consider using the antihistamine drug chlorpheniramine (chlorpheniramine) or the H1, H2 receptor blocker doxepin to treat various allergic itches caused by drugs or insect bites. The specific method is: melt the tablet with 75% alcohol, dip a small amount with a cotton swab and apply it to the external auditory canal, which can effectively relieve itching.

2. You can stop the itching by moving your mouth: Improper ear digging behavior can easily cause infection, pose a hidden danger to the health of the ear canal, and even affect hearing. Sometimes when your ears itch, you don’t have to use your hands to relieve the itch, just use your mouth.

3. Many times, itchy ears are caused by the accumulation of earwax in the ear canal. Cerumen, commonly known as earwax or cerumen, is an oily substance secreted by the cerumen glands in the skin of the external auditory canal. It has the function of protecting the skin of the external auditory canal and the eardrum. Under normal circumstances, earwax can be discharged in the form of thin flakes through jaw movements such as chewing and opening the mouth.

4. Traditional Chinese medicine prescription for treating itchy ears: 20 grams of raw rehmannia, 15 grams of gypsum, 10 grams each of apricot kernel, Xanthium sibiricum, and Mongolian flower, 5 grams each of raw licorice, Chuanxiong, and magnolia, and 3 grams of ephedra. Decoction, 1 dose per day. 9 grams each of Bupleurum, Scutellaria, and processed Pinellia, 6 grams of raw licorice, 15 grams of jujube kernels, 3 slices of ginger, and 5 jujubes. Decoction, 1 dose per day.
