Are removable dentures better or fixed dentures better?

Dental problems are a common phenomenon in our lives. They are usually caused by improper diet, frequent eating of sweets and lack of attention to oral hygiene over a long period of time. This will seriously affect our image and we will not be able to chew food fully. However, dentures are divided into fixed and removable dentures, but many people don’t know which type of denture to choose. Let’s learn about whether removable dentures or fixed dentures are better.

Are removable dentures better or fixed dentures?

The main advantage of fixed dentures is that they are comfortable to wear and have little foreign body sensation. It feels very close to your own real teeth, and daily care is relatively simple, as long as you use the correct brushing method. Fixed dentures are strong, comfortable, do not deform, have high chewing efficiency, do not interfere with pronunciation, and are suitable for repairing a small number of missing teeth. However, the disadvantages are also obvious. In the process of making dentures, a large amount of tooth tissue needs to be ground out. The adjacent teeth on both sides of the missing teeth are ground off, and then metal sleeves are made to connect the dentures together, and the metal sleeves are bonded to the adjacent teeth with adhesive. Just like building a bridge, the denture is the bridge and the adjacent teeth are the piers. Some people may experience symptoms of more sensitive teeth, such as pain from hot or cold stimulation or aggravated symptoms. Moreover, if the design and production are improper, it is easy to cause tooth and periodontal diseases, and the cost of dentures is also relatively high.

What about removable dentures? They are relatively better, mainly because less tooth tissue is removed, and are also called non-destructive denture method. The dentures are supported by the remaining teeth and gums in the mouth, and fixed by steel wires and plastic trays. It is easy to repair, has low cost for replacement, and is suitable for single or multiple missing teeth. The main disadvantage is that the plastic tray is large and has many parts, so there is often a foreign body sensation when first worn. Some of them affect pronunciation and even cause nausea, and the chewing efficiency is not as good as fixed dentures. They need to be cleaned and removed frequently, which is not very popular among young people. Moreover, if they are on the front teeth, they are not very beautiful. But now precision stainless steel brackets can be used instead of plastic brackets. It is strong and 2-3 times thinner than plastic tray, thus greatly improving the shortcomings.

Generally speaking, the type of denture that is suitable is determined based on the overall condition and specific conditions of the oral cavity. For example, if the last tooth is missing, it is better to have a fixed denture than a removable one, because the see-saw-like denture will make the front teeth loose. Ideal dentures allow chewing of food, restore aesthetics, and protect the health of other oral tissues.

The above is an introduction to whether removable dentures or fixed dentures are better. After understanding, we know that both types of dentures have their own advantages and disadvantages. We must make a choice based on the location of our damaged teeth and oral conditions. In addition, we must take care of our teeth in daily life, eat less sweets and pay attention to oral hygiene.
