What are the hazards of removable dentures

We know that once there is a problem with teeth, it will affect our ability to chew food, which will cause our stomach to not absorb food better, which is particularly bad for health. However, many people will install dentures when their teeth are damaged or fall out. Removable dentures are the most common and widely used, but they also have certain hazards. Let's learn about the hazards of removable dentures.

The dangers of removable dentures

Nowadays, many people still wear removable dentures. But do you know that removable dentures are harmful to your health?

Removable dentures mainly rely on hooks and base plates for retention and stability, and the tightness is difficult to adjust. If the hooks and brackets are too loose, there is a fear that they will fall off due to poor wearing; if they are too tight, there is a fear that they cannot be removed and cleaned, and the abutment teeth will also feel pain. The hook can easily damage, injure, or loosen the abutment teeth on both sides of the missing tooth, causing inflammation of the abutment teeth and increasing looseness until they fall off. If you re-attach your teeth, they will become loose again until all the teeth fall out, and you will only be able to get full removable dentures.

Whether the denture uses a metal or plastic base plate, if the edge is slightly longer or thicker, it will damage the gums and mucosal tissues, causing traumatic erosion and ulcers; if the base plate is too small, it will affect the retention effect of the denture, increase the burden of the chewing force of the abutment teeth, and affect the service life of the abutment teeth. The hooks and clasps of dentures are too long and can easily injure the tongue, gums and buccal mucosa, causing inflammation and ulceration of local tissues. The discomfort is obvious when first worn, which affects the quality of life. It took a lot of effort to get used to it, but because I had to put it on and take it off repeatedly, the hook became loose very easily, so I had to see a doctor in time to tighten it, otherwise it would easily fall into the esophagus, gastrointestinal tract or trachea along with the food. I once saw with my own eyes a female teacher who had just retired. Her dentures fell into her esophagus and the hooks got caught on the esophageal wall. When the dentures were removed under esophagoscopy, the hooks broke through the aortic wall and caused massive bleeding and death.

We now have many choices for dentures. Fixed porcelain tooth restorations have been gradually accepted because they have no hooks and base plates, are relatively firm and stable, comfortable and beautiful, and have a long service life. If there are many missing teeth, or only a few teeth left, fixed restorations of porcelain teeth cannot be installed, but semi-fixed restorations with precision attachments can be chosen. There are three commonly used ones:

1. Bolt-type porcelain tooth locking device can lock the removable denture firmly on the fixed porcelain tooth, and open it with a key for cleaning.

2. For patients with severe loose periodontitis, use a sleeve crown. The inner crown is fixed on the only tooth, and the outer crown is connected to the removable denture. The fit between the inner and outer crowns forms a good retention and plays a role in restorative treatment.

3. Magnetic retainer. Magnetic materials are installed in residual roots, residual crowns and other tooth roots and in the base of dentures using magnetic force to achieve retention and repair effects.

Although removable dentures can help us improve our chewing ability, they also have many disadvantages. The above is an introduction to the hazards of removable dentures. After understanding, we know that removable dentures also have certain hazards. They can easily damage the teeth on both sides and cannot chew hard food better. Therefore, we must cherish our teeth and maintain good oral hygiene in our daily lives.
