How to treat moderate periodontitis?

Periodontitis is a chronic disease that affects patients all the time and causes great harm to their oral cavity, so it needs timely treatment. Early treatment is relatively simple and effective, while late treatment is more difficult and the effect is not very good. So, don’t hesitate after discovering it, go to the hospital for examination and treatment in time. So, how should early periodontitis be treated?

The treatment of periodontitis mainly focuses on eliminating the cause, enhancing the health of periodontal tissues, and preventing the continued development of inflammation and atrophy. For middle-aged and elderly people, it is very important to enhance functional exercise to increase the vitality of periodontal tissues. Here are some simple methods:

Avoid horizontal brushing when brushing teeth. However, horizontal brushing is the common method of brushing teeth. Many people use hard-bristled large-headed toothbrushes to use gravity to do horizontal brushing in a sawing manner, which causes gum recession, exposed tooth roots, wedge-shaped defects in the neck of teeth and other diseases. Therefore, the correct way is to use a toothbrush with two rows of twelve bundles of bristles and use the vertical brushing method, that is, when brushing the upper teeth, the bristles should be brushed from top to bottom along the gaps between the teeth; when brushing the lower teeth, the bristles should be brushed from bottom to top along the gaps between the teeth. The movements should be slow, and repeated several times on the same part, so that the bristles can completely remove dirt when passing through the junction of the gums and teeth, and also have a massage effect on the gums.

1. Local treatment

The treatment of periodontitis is mainly local treatment. The first step is to remove the tartar above the gums (medically known as supragingival tartar), then remove the tartar in the periodontal pockets (i.e. subgingival tartar), and scrape off the diseased cementum in the periodontal pockets that contains a large amount of bacterial toxins. After these treatments, the redness and swelling of the gums can subside, and the bleeding gums and pus in the periodontal pockets can disappear.

After the periodontal pocket is formed, it is usually treated with drugs. Various drugs, such as iodine glycerin, compound iodine solution or antibacterial drugs, can be placed in the periodontal pocket to maintain a high drug concentration in the periodontal pocket, eliminate various bacteria in the periodontal pocket, and achieve the effects of bactericidal, anti-inflammatory and astringent.

II. Systemic treatment

If the above treatments are not effective, periodontal surgery is required. For those with loose teeth, different methods can be used to fix the loose teeth. For teeth with severe condition, extensive periodontal tissue damage and cannot be retained, extraction is required.

In addition to local treatment, systemic treatment can be adopted for those with obvious severe symptoms, that is, oral antibiotics, such as metronidazole, 0.2 grams three times a day, for 1 week; spiramycin, 0.2 grams four times a day, for 1 week; tinidazole, 0.5 grams twice a day.

It is recommended to use warm water and add some salt when rinsing your mouth. This can clean the mouth and have an anti-inflammatory effect. Periodontitis is the culprit for tooth loss in adults, so it should be taken seriously. Early treatment of periodontitis can stop the lesions and the periodontal tissue can recover better. Therefore, when your gums become red and swollen, you must go to the hospital for treatment in time.
