What to do if there is a foreign body in the nasal cavity

The nasal cavity is the main place where we breathe. All the air inhaled from the outside must pass through the nasal cavity. So if there are unclean objects in the air, they may remain in the nasal cavity. Over time, as there are too many objects, the human body will feel the presence of foreign objects in the nose. Let's take a look at what to do if there is foreign object in the nasal cavity.

The nasal cavity is a long and narrow cavity with a narrow top and a wide bottom. It starts from the anterior nostril in the front and ends at the posterior nostril in the back, and is connected to the nasopharynx. The nasal septum separates the nasal cavity into two cavities, each of which consists of the nasal vestibule and the proper nasal cavity. In higher vertebrates, it is an arched cavity located between the base of the skull and the roof of the mouth. It is a cavity surrounded by bones and cartilage and covered with mucous membrane and skin on the inside. The nasal cavity is divided into two left and right cavities by a longitudinal nasal septum. Because the nasal septum is often located to one side, the size and shape of the left and right nasal cavities are often asymmetrical. The nasal cavity communicates with the outside world through the nostrils forward and downward, and connects to the nasopharynx backward, which is called the posterior nasal aperture. Each nasal cavity is divided into two parts: the nasal vestibule and the proper nasal cavity. There are nasal hairs in the nasal cavity, which filter the inhaled air and reduce the inhalation of harmful substances such as dust. There are olfactory cells and secretory glands in the nasal mucosa, as well as a fairly rich number of capillaries. Therefore, the nasal cavity can warm and humidify the inhaled gas.

Nasal foreign body refers to the presence of foreign matter in the nasal cavity. Foreign bodies can be divided into three categories: non-biological foreign bodies, such as buttons, glass beads, paper rolls, toys, stones, soil, etc.; plant foreign bodies, such as fruit shells, peanuts, beans, fruit cores, etc.; animal foreign bodies, such as insects, roundworms, maggots, trichomonas, leeches, etc. Clinically, non-biological and plant foreign bodies are the most common, and are more common in pediatric patients.

Clinical manifestations

1. One side of the nasal cavity is blocked, with foul-smelling, purulent and bloody nasal discharge. 2. The nasal mucosa is red and swollen, and there are purulent secretions in the nasal cavity. If foreign matter remains in the nasal mucosa for too long, erosion and pseudomembrane may occur. After the secretions are eliminated and the nasal mucosa shrinks, foreign objects can be found.

Diagnosis

1. Most of them have a history of foreign objects entering the nose, trauma and surgery, which is common in young children. 2. Have the above symptoms and signs. 3. If it is a metal foreign body, an X-ray examination can determine the location and size of the foreign body.

Treatment principles

1. Remove foreign objects. 2. Antibiotic treatment. 3. Treat symptomatically.

Medication principles

Generally, no medication is needed. However, if the object is difficult to remove or the mucosa is damaged during removal, some basic medications can be used.

The nasal cavity plays a vital role in our breathing. The air passing through the nasal cavity is processed and more beneficial to the body, so the dirt in the nasal cavity is also an important key to protecting the nasal cavity. Therefore, it is recommended that you do not pick your nose with your hands. Pay attention to protecting your nose. If you feel there is a foreign object in your nose, go to the hospital to find out the cause.
