The place where chess pieces move is called a "chessboard". On a rectangular plane, nine parallel vertical lines and ten parallel horizontal lines are drawn, intersecting each other, with a total of ninety intersections. The middle part, that is, the blank area between the fifth and sixth horizontal lines of the chessboard without vertical lines is called the "river boundary". In the middle of the Chinese chess board, there is often a space with the words "Chu River" and "Han Boundary" written on it. This is a metaphor for the historical "Chu-Han War" by playing chess. According to historical records, the "Boundary between Chu and Han" was located in the ancient Xingyang and Chenggao area. Therefore, all chess pieces have the functions of "advance" and "retreat" (except for pawns crossing the river), while the horse, elephant (Xiang), and minister (Shi) do not have the concept of horizontal because they move diagonally.

Front, middle, and back: If you have two horses on a vertical line, then the horse that moves in front is the front horse advances one; if there are three soldiers on a vertical line, the one that moves in front is the front soldier advances one, the soldier in the middle moves horizontally is the middle soldier advances one, and the soldier behind moves horizontally is the rear soldier advances one.
