Why does the left side of my back hurt after taking a deep breath?

Acute and chronic damage

1. Acute injuries such as spinal fractures, tears of ligaments, muscles, and joint capsules, acute disc herniation, etc.

2. Chronic damage such as ligament inflammation, muscle strain, hyperplasia and degeneration of spinal bones and joints, spondylolisthesis, etc.

Inflammatory lesions

Inflammatory lesions are divided into two types: bacterial inflammation and non-bacterial inflammation.

1. Bacterial inflammation can be divided into purulent and specific infections such as spinal tuberculosis. Purulent infection is common in intervertebral disc infection, epidural abscess, and vertebral osteomyelitis.

2. Non-bacterial inflammation: rheumatic myofibrosarcoma, rheumatoid arthritis, transverse process syndrome of the third lumbar vertebra, ankylosing spondylitis, and dense osteitis of the energy storage joints.

Back pain caused by cervical spondylosis

How can cervical spondylosis cause back pain when it occurs in the cervical spine? Originally, the posterior branches of the spinal nerves of the fourth, fifth, and sixth cervical vertebrae extend to the back and control the skin and muscles of the upper back. When degenerative changes occur in the cervical spine, if the posterior branches of the spinal nerves of the fourth, fifth, and sixth cervical vertebrae are pulled, back pain will occur. In addition, neck and back pain, upper limb weakness, finger numbness, dizziness, nausea and even blurred vision and swallowing difficulty are all manifestations of cervical spondylosis. Note: People with cervical spondylosis should pay attention to the appropriate height of the pillow when sleeping, keep warm, and get proper rest.

Back pain caused by neck strain and stiff neck

Due to improper neck movement or bad sleeping position, local muscles are sprained and the pain involves the back muscles. The medical history is short, the tenderness point is fixed and located at the injured muscle site, which is more common in the upper inner part of the scapula, and is accompanied by muscle spasm. Obviously tender cord-like spasmodic muscle bundles can be felt, and the movement of the neck and back is obviously limited. Note: When a sports injury to the lower back occurs, the first thing to do is to stop exercising immediately to avoid aggravating the injury. Immediately after the injury and within 24 hours, use cold compresses on the painful area to relieve pain, and keep it on for 30 minutes each time. Avoid hot compresses, massage, or the use of blood-activating drugs.

Back pain caused by rheumatism

Rheumatism is mostly an autoimmune disease with insidious and slow onset and a long course. It invades joints, bones, muscles, blood vessels and related soft tissues, and can cause a certain degree of back pain. The back pain is aggravated by cool weather, cold and dampness. Note: It is especially important for people with rheumatism to keep warm. Do not touch cold water, stay in air-conditioned rooms for a long time, etc.

Back pain caused by frozen shoulder

Scapulohumeral periarthritis can cause shoulder pain. As the disease progresses, the pain range will continue to increase, and some patients will experience back pain. Note: Strengthening physical training is an effective way to prevent and treat periarthritis of the shoulder, but persistence is the key. If you do not persist in training and rehabilitation treatment, it will be difficult for the shoulder joint to return to normal function. In addition, malnutrition can lead to physical weakness, and physical weakness often leads to periarthritis of the shoulder. If the nutrition is adequate and proper exercise is taken, frozen shoulder can often be cured without medication.

Back pain caused by ankylosing spondylitis

Patients with ankylosing spondylitis will experience slow, widespread or persistent low back pain, tenderness over the spinous processes, stiffness in the back and waist after getting up in the morning, aggravated back and waist pain when leaning back, improvement after activity, and easy fatigue after standing or walking for a long time. Patients often present with limited movement of the lower back and waist. Physical examination may reveal tenderness of the lumbar spinous processes and paraspinal muscle spasms. In the later stages, muscle atrophy and even hunchback deformity may occur. Note: For patients with ankylosing spondylitis, they need to sleep on a hard bed in their daily life and cannot use pillows. This can also help ensure that the body lies upright. It is better to choose a supine or side-lying posture.

Back pain caused by poor posture

Working at a desk or bending over for a long time can cause back pain. Note: If you are working at a computer or at a desk, keep your neck straight and lean forward slightly to avoid excessive strain on your neck. In fact, there are no fixed rules. As long as you feel relaxed and your neck is relaxed, you can do it.
