Greater occipital neuralgia

Greater occipital neuralgia

Occipital neuralgia refers to paroxysmal or persistent pain in the greater occipital nerve, or the back of the head. Patients usually experience needle-like pain in the back of the head and cannot turn over, which causes the head and neck to be in an extended position, which is very bad for the neck. Occipital neuralgia causes great harm to patients. Once you find yourself having similar symptoms, you should go to the hospital for treatment in time and do not delay, otherwise it will increase the difficulty of later treatment and increase the cost of treatment.

Occipital neuralgia is caused by colds, wind-colds, etc., and may also be caused by early cervical spondylosis. Therefore, patients need to keep warm and avoid colds. If they are sick, they should go to the hospital for treatment as soon as possible and be cured thoroughly, otherwise it will be very bad if other diseases are caused. There are many treatments for occipital neuralgia. Let’s take a look at them below.

1. Drug therapy is the same as that for trigeminal neuralgia, such as using vitamin B drugs. If the pain is obvious, dalantine or carbamazepine can be used.

2. Blockade treatment, such as 2 ml of 1-2% novocaine plus 100 μg of vitamin B12 to block the supraorbital notch, once every other day, and symptoms can be relieved after 3 to 5 times.

3. Combined with physical therapy such as interkinetic electrotherapy (sparse-dense wave) therapy or gyromagnetic therapy.

4. Cervical traction treatment can be added for those caused by mild neck trauma or hyperplastic cervical spondylosis.

Occipital neuralgia brings endless pain to patients and keeps the neck in an extended state for a long time, which is very bad for the cervical spine. Therefore, patients need to go to the hospital for treatment as soon as possible after finding themselves feeling unwell. Do not delay, and do not give up treatment when you feel your condition has improved. If it is not completely cured, it will also spread to other nerves, which will be very harmful to the body.
