Biliary ascariasis

Biliary ascariasis

If the ascaris enters the bile duct system, it becomes biliary ascariasis. Biliary ascariasis is relatively rare in adults, and it is more common in adolescents and children. Especially if you do not pay attention to food hygiene, the chance of contracting biliary ascariasis will be relatively higher. Biliary ascariasis can cause many adverse consequences. Therefore, in order to prevent this disease, you must maintain good hygiene habits and wash your hands frequently before and after meals.

Ascaris generally rarely parasitizes the biliary system and often exists in the small intestine of humans. However, due to the nature of early drilling, some intestinal ascaris will occasionally enter the bile duct and cause biliary ascariasis. If not treated properly, it can cause bile duct stones.

Biliary ascariasis is common in children and young adults, and is more common in women. Most patients have a history of intestinal ascariasis, vomiting worms, or excreting worms. Some patients had recent anthelmintic treatment.

1. Abdominal pain Abdominal pain is the main symptom of this disease, which is often located in the upper and middle abdomen under the xiphoid process, presenting as paroxysmal, drilling-like, severe colic. The patient tosses and turns, is restless, and sweats profusely.

2. Another characteristic of this disease is the absence or only mild jaundice. Because the worms are smooth and mobile, they are not likely to completely block the bile duct. If secondary infection and inflammation occur later and cause bile duct obstruction, it may be accompanied by obvious jaundice, which occurs in 20% of cases.

3. Chills and fever often occur 24 hours after onset and are accompanied by biliary tract infection.

4. Abdominal signs: In the early stage of this disease, there is only slight fixed tenderness under the xiphoid process or in the right upper abdomen, without rebound pain or muscle guarding. Severe symptoms and mild signs are another characteristic of this disease. The skin and sclera may have mild yellowing. If the tenderness expands, be alert to the possibility of complications.

Ascaris may seem small, but once they drill into the bile duct and cause biliary ascariasis, they may cause greater harm. If parents find that their children have unbearable abdominal pain, they should take them to the hospital for examination as soon as possible. In order to prevent biliary ascariasis, children must be careful to prevent disease from entering the body through the mouth and wash their hands frequently to avoid intestinal diseases and adverse consequences.
