Dosage

Oral potassium salts are used to treat mild hypokalemia or for prophylaxis. The usual dose for adults is 0.5-1g (2-4 tablets) each time, 2-4 times a day, after meals, and the dose can be adjusted according to the condition. The maximum daily dose for adults is generally 6g (24 tablets).


Adverse Reactions

(1) Oral administration may cause gastrointestinal irritation symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, throat discomfort, chest pain (esophageal irritation), abdominal pain, diarrhea, and even peptic ulcer and bleeding. It is more likely to occur when the patient is on an empty stomach, taking large doses, or has existing gastrointestinal diseases. (2) When renal function is impaired, attention should be paid to the occurrence of hyperkalemia.

(1) Patients with hyperkalemia. (2) Patients with acute renal insufficiency or chronic renal insufficiency.

Precautions

(1) Use with caution in the following situations: ① Acute dehydration, which can lead to decreased urine volume and urinary K excretion in severe cases; ② Familial periodic paralysis; hypokalemic paralysis should be treated with potassium supplements, but hyperkalemic or normokalemic periodic paralysis must be differentiated; ③ Chronic or severe diarrhea can cause hypokalemia, but can also cause dehydration and hyponatremia, leading to prerenal oliguria; ④ Conduction block arrhythmias, especially when digitalis drugs are used; ⑤ Extensive burns, muscle trauma, severe infection, 2 to 4 hours after major surgery, and severe hemolysis, all of which can cause hyperkalemia; ⑥ Adrenal dysregulation syndrome with insufficient mineralocorticoid secretion; ⑦ Patients receiving potassium-sparing diuretics. (2) The following follow-up examinations are required during medication: ① serum potassium; ② electrocardiogram; ③ serum magnesium, sodium, and calcium; ④ acid-base balance indexes; ⑤ renal function and urine volume. (3) Ordinary tablets and sugar-coated tablets have a strong irritating effect on the gastrointestinal tract, so it is best to dissolve them into a solution before taking them.
