What harm does teratoma do to the body

Teratoma is a common germ cell tumor. Most of them are benign, but if not treated in time, they may cause harm to the body. Treatments include surgical resection, drug therapy, and regular follow-up. The specific choice depends on the nature of the tumor and the patient's physical condition.

1. Teratoma may cause pain and compression symptoms. When teratoma grows in the ovaries, testicles or other parts, it may compress surrounding tissues, causing symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating or dysuria. Surgical resection is the main treatment method. Complete removal of the tumor through laparoscopy or laparotomy can effectively relieve symptoms.

2. Teratomas have the risk of malignant transformation. Although most teratomas are benign, a few may develop into malignant germ cell tumors, such as immature teratomas or malignant teratomas. Regular imaging examinations such as ultrasound, CT, and tumor marker testing can help detect malignant tendencies at an early stage, and chemotherapy or radiotherapy may be required if necessary.

3. Teratoma may affect fertility. Ovarian teratoma may damage ovarian tissue and affect ovulation; testicular teratoma may affect sperm production. For patients who want to have children, they can choose a surgical method that preserves fertility, such as ovarian cystectomy or partial orchiectomy. After the operation, hormone levels and fertility need to be closely monitored.

4. Teratoma may cause complications. Tumor rupture or twisting may cause acute abdominal pain, internal bleeding or infection, requiring emergency surgery. After surgery, you need to pay attention to preventing infection, keep the wound clean, and take antibiotics as prescribed by the doctor.

The treatment of teratoma requires a personalized plan based on the nature of the tumor, the patient's age and fertility needs. Early detection and standardized treatment are key. Patients should have regular checkups to monitor tumor changes and choose the most suitable treatment under the guidance of a doctor to minimize harm to the body.
