Is it possible that rectal cancer is inherited?

There is indeed a certain possibility of colorectal cancer being inherited, especially when a direct relative has colorectal cancer or a related cancer, the genetic risk will be higher.

From a medical point of view, some colorectal cancers are caused by genetic mutations, such as hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) or familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). These genetic syndromes significantly increase the risk of colorectal cancer. However, most colorectal cancers are more related to environmental factors and lifestyle habits, such as high-fat diet, sedentary life, smoking, heavy drinking and lack of fiber. For people with a family history of the disease, it is particularly important to understand the genetic risk, so as to facilitate timely intervention and monitoring.

If there are relatives with colorectal cancer in the family, especially first-degree relatives (parents, siblings or children), it is recommended to understand personal genetic conditions as early as possible and conduct standardized screening, such as regular colonoscopy. For people who do not have an obvious family history but are still worried about the risk, adjusting their lifestyle is particularly important. Eating more foods rich in dietary fiber (such as grains, beans, fruits and vegetables), reducing the intake of high-fat and high-sugar processed foods, and engaging in regular physical exercise can help reduce the overall risk of cancer.

If you find yourself having symptoms such as indigestion, abnormal bowel habits (such as blood in the stool, frequent diarrhea or constipation), weight loss, or a clear family history, it is recommended that you consult a doctor as soon as possible. Screening and early intervention are important ways to prevent and treat rectal cancer. The earlier you intervene, the better the effect.
