Does atrophic gastritis increase the chance of developing gastric cancer?

Is there a high risk of developing gastric cancer in patients with atrophic gastritis?

The probability of atrophic gastritis developing into gastric cancer is approximately 6% to 10%.

Atrophic gastritis is an inflammatory disease in which the number and compliance of gastric mucosal epithelial cells decrease, and it is also an important early lesion of gastric cancer. It can lead to a decrease in the number of intrinsic glands in the gastric mucosa and a decrease in gastric acid secretion, and may also be accompanied by Helicobacter pylori infection, which is a risk factor for gastric cancer.

Atrophic gastritis is closely related to the incidence of gastric cancer. The longer atrophic gastritis exists, the greater the risk of gastric cancer. The probability of patients with atrophic gastritis developing gastric cancer is about 6% to 10%, while the probability of patients without atrophic gastritis developing gastric cancer is only 0.4% to 0.6%.

Atrophic gastritis itself does not necessarily lead to gastric cancer. In many patients with atrophic gastritis, the incidence of gastric cancer is very low. For patients with atrophic gastritis, adopting a healthy lifestyle in daily life, changing eating habits, quitting smoking and limiting drinking, maintaining a good attitude, and undergoing regular physical examinations are all important measures to prevent gastric cancer.

If you are diagnosed with atrophic gastritis, it is recommended to actively treat it and have regular checkups. Regular gastroscopy can detect early lesions of gastric cancer in time, and you should go to the hospital in time if you have any physical abnormalities.
