Can colon cancer be cured?

Whether colorectal cancer can be cured depends on many factors, including not only the biological characteristics of the tumor, but also factors such as early diagnosis, staging, and treatment.

1. Generally speaking, if colon cancer is found early, there is no local spread and remote metastasis, and the lesions are limited to the local area. Timely surgery can be performed under colonoscopy. For patients who can meet the criteria for complete resection under colonoscopy, the 5-year survival rate is as high as 95%. Some patients who cannot be resected under colonoscopy can undergo surgical resection. Depending on the stage and type, postoperative chemotherapy may also have a chance of complete cure.

2. Be prepared to prevent recurrence after treatment. Regular monitoring of colonoscopy, abdominal ultrasound, etc. to prevent recurrence of colon cancer. CT and some blood monitoring indicators can detect the recurrence site early. With relevant treatment, it is also possible to achieve long-term survival.

3. If intestinal cancer is discovered late, with severe local infiltration, extensive metastasis, or intestinal obstruction, or complications such as intestinal bleeding, perforation, or purulent peritonitis, surgical treatment cannot remove the cancer and only maintenance treatment or symptomatic treatment is available, which is difficult to cure.

4. In recent years, with the advancement of medical research, new drugs for advanced tumors have been continuously introduced, making it possible for some colon cancer patients who previously had no chance of long-term survival to be cured.

If treated early and promptly, bowel cancer may still be curable. The key is early diagnosis and early treatment.
