Thyroid cancer has not grown in size for half a year, do I still need treatment?

Thyroid cancer is a malignant tumor. It is normal for some patients not to have their tumors grow larger within six months. Because the progression of thyroid cancer is related to tumor size and treatment methods, patients are advised to follow the doctor's advice and receive standardized treatment.

1. Reasons:

The cause of thyroid cancer has not been fully clarified. It is believed that it may be related to factors such as genetics, gender, radiation, mental stress, and iodine deficiency. Most thyroid cancers originate from follicular epithelial cells and progress slowly. A lump is usually found in the thyroid gland. There are no obvious symptoms in the early stage. Some patients may experience symptoms such as neck pain, hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, and difficulty breathing. If the patient has a strong immune system and the disease progresses slowly, it may not grow larger within half a year.

2. Treatment:

1. Surgical treatment: Patients can choose the appropriate surgical method according to their condition. If the tumor is relatively small, thyroid lobectomy and isthmus resection can be selected. If the tumor is relatively large, a second operation can be performed on the basis of total thyroidectomy.

2. Radioactive iodine therapy: Patients with thyroid cancer can also use radioactive iodine therapy to kill cancer cells. This is suitable for patients with papillary thyroid cancer who are insensitive to radioactive iodine.

3. Endocrine therapy: Thyroxine can inhibit the secretion of TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) or stimulate the synthesis and secretion of thyroid hormone, thereby correcting the state of hypothyroidism, but it may cause recurrence of thyroid cancer. Commonly used drugs in clinical practice include levothyroxine sodium tablets, etc.

4. Chemotherapy: If lymph node metastasis or lung metastasis occurs after surgery, chemotherapy can be performed as prescribed by the doctor to inhibit the growth of cancer cells and prevent the spread of cancer cells.

It is recommended that patients diagnosed with thyroid cancer go to the hospital's tumor surgery department in time for treatment, clarify their condition through palpation, blood routine tests, color ultrasound examinations, etc., and receive treatment under the guidance of a doctor.
