Is the recurrence rate high after unilateral resection of thyroid cancer?

Is the recurrence rate high after unilateral resection of thyroid cancer?

Thyroid cancer is a common endocrine tumor in clinical practice. Recurrence of thyroid cancer patients after unilateral resection may be due to factors such as surgical residues, lymph node metastasis, incomplete removal of cancer cells, and low body immunity. Different treatments need to be adopted according to different situations.

1. Surgical residue: If the lesion is not completely removed during surgery, but only most of it is removed, tiny lesions or residual lesions may appear locally after surgery. When the body's immunity decreases, it may cause thyroid cancer to recur. It is recommended that patients go to the hospital for surgical treatment in time, and receive radiotherapy, chemotherapy, etc. according to the condition;

2. Lymph node metastasis: If thyroid cancer patients have unilateral lymph node metastasis, after surgical removal of the lesion, they need to cooperate with radionuclide iodine-131 treatment or chemotherapy according to the condition to eliminate the residual cancer cells in the body. If bilateral cervical lymph node metastasis occurs, cervical lymph node dissection is required;

3. Cancer cells are not completely removed: If the lesion is not completely removed during surgery, but only the lesion site is removed, the cancer cells may continue to grow after surgery. When the body's immunity is reduced, it may cause thyroid cancer to recur. It is recommended that patients go to the hospital for examination in time and have the neck lymph nodes cleaned through surgery;

4. Low body immunity: After thyroid cancer surgery, the body's immunity has not yet returned to normal. If pathogenic factors such as bacteria, viruses and other infections occur at this time, it may cause thyroid cancer to recur. It is recommended that patients follow the doctor's advice after surgery and use BCG, epirubicin and other immunity-enhancing drugs for treatment.

It is recommended that patients with thyroid cancer who experience recurrence after unilateral resection should go to the hospital's tumor surgery department in time, complete blood routine tests, pathological biopsy and other tests to confirm the diagnosis, and actively receive treatment according to the doctor's orders.
