Can't have children if you have thyroid cancer?

Whether a woman with thyroid cancer can have children depends on the type, stage, and treatment of the cancer. Generally speaking, patients with early-stage papillary and follicular cancers can have children if their condition stabilizes and there is no recurrence after standardized treatment.

1. Papillary carcinoma: Papillary carcinoma is a common type of thyroid cancer, with a low degree of malignancy and a good prognosis. If the patient is in the early stage when the disease is discovered and there is no lymph node metastasis or distant metastasis, she can have children. However, during pregnancy, she needs to regularly review thyroid color Doppler ultrasound, thyroid function and other examination items to understand the changes in the condition;

2. Follicular carcinoma: Follicular carcinoma is also a common type of thyroid cancer, and its malignancy is relatively low. If the patient is in the early stage when the disease is discovered, and there is no lymph node metastasis or distant metastasis, it is still possible to have children. However, during pregnancy, thyroid color Doppler ultrasound, thyroid function and other examination items should be regularly reviewed to understand the changes in the condition;

3. Other types: In addition to the above two types of thyroid cancer, other types of thyroid cancer such as medullary carcinoma and undifferentiated carcinoma are highly malignant and are generally not recommended for childbearing. This is because the patient's condition is more serious at this time, and distant metastasis may occur, such as lung metastasis, bone metastasis, etc. If you have a child at this time, it may increase the burden on the body and is not conducive to recovery.

It is recommended that patients go to the hospital promptly after being diagnosed with thyroid cancer and actively cooperate with the doctor for treatment. They should also pay attention to maintaining a good attitude and avoid excessive tension and anxiety.
