What are the adverse reactions after hemisection of thyroid cancer

Thyroid cancer hemisection refers to total thyroidectomy. Adverse reactions may involve the nerves, lymphatic system, immune system, etc. After thyroid cancer hemisection, it is necessary to observe the patient's vital signs, closely observe the surgical incision, change the dressing in time, and avoid infection.

1. Nerves: Hemisection of thyroid cancer may damage the recurrent laryngeal nerve, superior laryngeal nerve, etc., causing sequelae such as hoarseness, lowered voice, and coughing when drinking water. It may also damage the parathyroid glands, causing hypocalcemia, numbness of the limbs, cramps, etc. Damage to the superior laryngeal nerve may also cause discomfort such as coughing when drinking water and difficulty swallowing;

2. Lymphatic system: After hemisection of thyroid cancer, lymphatic vessels may be damaged, resulting in obstruction of lymphatic return, and patients may suffer from lymphedema after surgery. The recurrent laryngeal nerve may also be damaged, causing sequelae such as coughing when drinking water, air leakage when speaking, and difficulty breathing;

3. Immune system: After a patient undergoes hemisection of thyroid cancer, the body's immune system may stimulate peripheral blood vessels and produce an immune response. However, this immune response may not work, leading to immune deficiency, causing the patient to suffer from repeated upper respiratory tract infections, lung infections, etc.

4. Skin: Some patients may experience skin scar hyperplasia after hemisection of thyroid cancer without paying attention to postoperative care. A small number of patients may also experience subcutaneous effusion, local skin temperature increase, swelling and pain, and other discomforts after surgery.

In addition to the above, hemisection of thyroid cancer may also damage thyroid function, which manifests as hypothyroidism. A small number of patients may also develop a neck mass due to recurrence of thyroid cancer. It is recommended to stay in the hospital for one week after hemisection of thyroid cancer and closely observe the postoperative situation. Care should be taken to keep the wound clean and dry to avoid infection. Daily attention should be paid to supplement nutrition to promote postoperative recovery.
