It has been half a month since the elderly had colon cancer surgery. Should he use chemotherapy?

Generally speaking, if the elderly are in good physical condition and have a mild disease, chemotherapy is not necessary. However, if the patient is in poor physical condition or has a high tumor stage, chemotherapy is required under the guidance of a doctor.

1. Situations where chemotherapy is not needed: For some elderly patients with colon cancer who are in good physical condition, they can be discharged from the hospital and go home to recuperate 5-7 days after surgery, and their recovery is good. At this time, they can follow the doctor's advice for regular checkups, and no other auxiliary treatments are needed;

2. Situations where chemotherapy is required: Due to large individual differences, each patient's condition and physical fitness are different. Therefore, it is recommended that such people seek medical treatment in a timely manner for complete examinations, and decide whether to continue chemotherapy based on their own situation after a clear diagnosis. Generally speaking, if the patient has underlying diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, or is older, he or she may not be able to tolerate the side effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy, such as nausea, vomiting, and bone marrow suppression. A comprehensive judgment should also be made based on the pathological type and immunohistochemistry results. If it is a poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma, it indicates a high degree of malignancy and is prone to recurrence and metastasis. In this case, further chemotherapy measures are also needed to consolidate the therapeutic effect.

Whether or not to undergo chemotherapy needs to be evaluated by a professional doctor and cannot be generalized. Usually, pay attention to maintaining a good attitude and avoid excessive mood swings; eat light and easy-to-digest food as much as possible, and eat more fresh vegetables and fruits to supplement vitamin C to help improve immunity.
