Wrist pain and finger numbness

Wrist pain and finger numbness

Fingers can be said to be the extremities of our body. If there is a problem with them, it means that there is some problem with our health. When the wrist hurts and the fingers are numb, many people worry that they may have a cerebral infarction or blood clot. In fact, in addition to these two basic conditions, many other situations can also cause us to experience this symptom. For example, cervical spondylosis, viral infection, insufficient blood supply, etc.

The sensory nerves of the fingers are distributed to the hands and fingers by the nerve roots that branch out from the cervical spinal cord. When the nerves in certain parts are damaged, inflamed, have tumors, are compressed, etc., causing abnormal sensation, numbness and pain in the fingers will occur.

Common diseases that cause numbness and pain in fingers include:

Peripheral neuritis is an inflammatory reaction caused by poisoning, infection, vitamin B1 deficiency, blood supply disorders in the fingers, etc., which can cause numbness and pain in the fingers. Symptoms appear in the fingers of both hands at the same time and can usually be recovered after the cause is eliminated. Treatments such as oral or injection of vitamin B1 or acupuncture can promote recovery.

Ulnar nerve damage When the ulnar nerve in the forearm and upper arm is injured, compressed or develops a tumor, it can cause numbness and pain in the little finger and ring finger on the same side and some finger movement disorders. The ulnar nerve groove at the back of the elbow is more susceptible to injury or compression. Most cases gradually recover in about half a year after the injury, but if there is a tumor, complete rupture or severe compression, surgical treatment is often required.

Damage to the median nerve: Traumatic, swollen or compressed median nerve in the forearm and upper arm often causes numbness and pain in the palm, thumb, index finger and middle finger. The wrists in particular are most susceptible to injury or pressure, which is medically known as carpal tunnel syndrome.

Radial nerve damage The radial nerve in the middle and lower outer parts of the upper arm is also more susceptible to injury, which may cause numbness and pain on the back of the thumb and index finger and drooping of the fingers and wrist.

Lesions or injuries to the brachial plexus in the axilla or anterior neck can cause mixed symptoms of complete or partial damage to the ulnar, median, and radial nerves.

Cervical spondylosis, cervical vertebrae hypertrophy or cervical disc degeneration and protrusion, etc., compressing the cervical nerve roots or cervical spinal cord can cause unilateral or bilateral finger numbness and pain, and gradually develop into upper arm, forearm and even upper limb movement disorders. Numbness and pain in the right fingers may develop into unbearable numbness and pain in the entire arm to the shoulder, making it difficult to hold a pen or knit a sweater. However, when the hand is hanging down (without exerting force), the fingers do not feel numb or painful. This indicates that the right upper limb is not under pressure after relaxation and the lesion is still relatively mild.
