How to treat pneumococcal pneumonia

How to treat pneumococcal pneumonia

Pneumonia is a common and frequently occurring disease in autumn and winter. Especially for young children, bronchitis often turns into pneumonia. Symptoms include fever, chills, and loss of appetite. It caused great pain to the patients. The most common bacteria that cause pneumonia are pneumococcus or Streptococcus pneumoniae. Once pneumonia is diagnosed, antibiotic intervention should be initiated immediately. Otherwise the disease will progress quickly. There is even a risk of life-threatening consequences.

Treatment of pneumococcal pneumonia:

1. Antimicrobial drug treatment.

Antibiotic treatment should be started immediately upon diagnosis, without waiting for bacterial culture results. For pneumococcal pneumonia, penicillin G is the first choice. Lincomycin 2g daily intravenous drip can also be used; other cephalosporins, such as cephalothin, cefazolin; fluoroquinolones, such as ofloxacin; ciprofloxacin can also be used for severe patients. The course of antibiotic treatment is generally 5-7 days, or the drug should be stopped 3 days after the fever subsides.

2. Supportive therapy.

The patient should rest in bed, pay attention to adequate intake of protein, calories and vitamins, monitor breathing, heart rate, blood pressure and urine volume, and pay attention to possible shock. If there is obvious chest pain, a small amount of analgesic can be given, such as codeine 15mg, to relieve it. Do not use aspirin or other antipyretics to avoid excessive sweating and dehydration, which may lead to clinical errors. Encourage drinking 1-2L of water per day. Moderately or severely ill patients should be given oxygen.

3. Treatment of complications.

4. Treatment of septic shock.
