What causes liver cancer in children?

Hepatoblastoma is a type of liver cancer and the most common malignant liver tumor in children. It originates from the embryonic tissue of the liver and accounts for 1% of all malignant tumors in children and 90% of malignant liver tumors in children. Among all hepatoblastoma patients, 4% occur in newborns, 68% occur within 2 years old, 90% occur within 5 years old, and only 3% of patients are older than 15 years old.

In the later stages, children may experience upper or whole abdominal distension, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, weight loss, diarrhea, varicose veins of the abdominal wall, fever, jaundice, and other symptoms.

Because the rapid growth of tumor cells increases the tension of the liver capsule and causes abdominal distension and pain, and most children will have elevated alpha-fetoprotein levels, the alpha-fetoprotein level and clinical manifestations can be used to determine whether the child has liver cancer. Once confirmed, treatment should be given. For those that can be surgically removed, surgical resection should be performed immediately and auxiliary chemotherapy should be given. For those that cannot be surgically removed, other means of treatment should be used.
