Symptoms of heart regurgitation

Heart regurgitation is a relatively complicated heart disease condition. What causes the symptoms of heart regurgitation? Arrhythmia is the most common, and because the volume of one of the atria increases and the flow rate becomes slower, it eventually leads to the formation of blood clots. Therefore, patients with this condition must undergo timely examination and treatment. Heart disease is a relatively common disease nowadays. Especially middle-aged and elderly people must pay attention to their daily diet and exercise and have regular check-ups.

Mitral Regurgitation Symptoms

With chronic mitral regurgitation, the left atrium dilates passively without significant pressure increase, preventing the early shortness of breath that is so common in mitral stenosis.

Chronic mitral regurgitation increases left ventricular preload, leading to left ventricular dilation and systolic dysfunction. The onset of typical symptoms is later than that of mitral stenosis. Of course, acute mitral regurgitation has immediate symptoms because of the sudden increase in left atrial pressure without left atrial compliance.

Acute mitral regurgitation causes an immediate increase in left atrial pressure and shortness of breath, while chronic mitral regurgitation only moderately increases left atrial pressure; fatigue and loss of mobility are the main symptoms.

As with mitral stenosis, all patients with mitral regurgitation and atrial fibrillation should be anticoagulated. It is less clear whether anticoagulation is necessary while the patient remains in sinus rhythm. However, when the left atrial volume increases and the flow rate slows down, thrombosis is very likely to form.

Experts say that when diagnosing mitral regurgitation by auscultation, the holosystolic murmur is heard most clearly at the apex of the heart and radiates to the armpit. The best test is echocardiography, particularly transesophageal examination, in which only soft tissue is between the ultrasound probe and the valve, allowing the regurgitant jet to be seen head-on.
