Will drinking milk increase blood sugar?

Milk is a drink that many people like to drink. Drinking milk in moderation can help enhance your physical fitness. However, many people with high blood sugar levels dare not drink milk because they believe that milk will cause their blood sugar to rise. In fact, drinking milk does not cause high blood sugar. If high blood sugar occurs after drinking milk, it is probably caused by improper drinking method.

1. Does drinking milk cause blood sugar to rise?

Generally, pure milk contains 5 grams of carbohydrates per 100 ml, which is about 1mmol/L. However, when blood sugar levels are normal, the blood sugar level of milk will not rise quickly but slowly, so the impact on blood sugar is not significant.

2. Why does blood sugar rise suddenly after drinking milk?

(1) Blood sugar levels before meals are low, below 3.9mmol/L, which will accelerate the absorption of milk, so blood sugar levels will rise sharply after drinking milk.

Treatment: If blood sugar before a meal is lower than 3.9 mmol/L, it is recommended to take 5 grams of glucose tablets or 50 ml of juice first, and then eat normally after the blood sugar rises to the normal range. Put the milk 2 hours after the meal and drink it as a snack.

(2) People are sensitive to lactose and their blood sugar levels will rise sharply after drinking milk.

Solution: Drink milk with other foods, such as nuts + half a cucumber + milk. Drink the milk last so that there is some other food in the stomach and the sensitivity to lactose is reduced.

(3) The amount of milk consumed at one time is relatively large, about 500 ml.

Treatment method: It is recommended to drink about 200ml of milk at a time.

(4) Drinking milk while eating staple food will speed up the absorption rate of the staple food and cause blood sugar to rise faster.

Solution: Drink milk first and wait for 15 minutes before eating vegetables and staple foods, keeping dry and wet foods separate. Or drink milk 15 minutes after a meal.

(5) What you drink is not pure milk, but fruit-flavored milk, which causes blood sugar to rise faster. Because fruit flavored milk contains fruit flavor additives, the carbohydrate content increases and blood sugar rises faster.

Treatment method: It is recommended to drink original pure milk.

3. Dietary considerations for diabetic patients

Research in the international nutrition community encourages diabetic patients to not only continue to eat staple foods, but also to consume dairy products in moderation to obtain sufficient nutrients and improve their quality of life. What needs to be controlled are only refined white rice, refined white flour and refined sugar, as well as the huge excess of fat and salt in the current diet.
