Chemotherapy is the use of drugs to treat cancer. These special drugs work to kill cancer cells and are sometimes called cytotoxic drugs. Many chemotherapy drugs come from natural sources, such as plants, while others are synthetic. There are more than 50 chemotherapy drugs, such as epirubicin, doxorubicin, daunorubicin, mitomycin, and fluorouracil. These drugs are often used in combination in varying strengths. How is chemotherapy given? Some chemotherapy drugs are given as tablets. Others are injected into a muscle or subcutaneously. Some are injected into the spinal cord (intrathecally). More often, they are given intravenously. Intravenous injections can be given over a few minutes or over a few hours in a large volume of fluid. Sometimes several drugs are given at the same time. What type of chemotherapy is used? This depends on the type of tumor, how far it has spread, and the patient's overall health. Every patient is different, and treatment is tailored for each patient, which means each patient responds differently to treatment. |
