Symptoms of primary brain tumors

Common symptoms of primary brain tumors include nausea, vomiting and headaches. Depending on the location of the tumor, patients may also experience convulsions, decreased vision and hearing, cognitive decline, stroke, paralysis and other symptoms.

Characteristics of primary brain tumors

Primary brain tumors rarely spread beyond the central nervous system and skull and cause death, but patients with advanced brain metastases have a poor prognosis. Primary brain tumors can become cancerous and may cause complications such as severe vision or hearing loss and stroke.

Types of primary brain tumors

Common primary brain tumors are gliomas, meningiomas, pituitary adenomas, acoustic neuromas, primary lymphomas of the central nervous system and primitive (medulloblastoma) neuroectodermal tumors.

Acoustic neuroma originates from the vestibular nerve; lymphoma originates from lymphocytes: often occurs in AIDS patients; meningioma originates from the meninges; pineal tumors are rare and mostly originate from the pineal gland; pituitary adenomas originate from the surface cells of the pituitary gland; schwannomas generally originate from the myelin sheath covering the neuron cells, etc.
