Patients with ovarian cancer and diabetes should control blood sugar before surgery

Ovarian cancer is a common gynecological malignancy, and is more common in women aged 40 to 65, which is also the high-risk age for diabetes. In recent years, the incidence of diabetes has increased significantly, and the number of patients with ovarian cancer and diabetes has increased year by year. Before surgery, the patient's blood sugar must be controlled within the normal range, at least to the point where the patient can tolerate the surgery. Otherwise, it will have an adverse effect on the patient's treatment and prognosis.

High blood sugar causes wound infection and difficulty in healing

Diabetes can cause small vessel disease in patients, reduced peripheral blood supply, and poor local resistance. Non-enzymatic glycosylation causes the microvascular basement membrane to thicken, causing protein and body fluid to leak out, and hindering the entry of white blood cells into the tissues. The activity of white blood cells and macrophages is also weakened, thus prolonging the inflammatory period. The wounds of patients after surgery are extremely susceptible to infection and the prognosis is poor.

In addition, the role of macrophages in promoting fibroblast maturation and collagen synthesis is inhibited, granulation formation is slow, resulting in non-healing or cracking of the incision.

Hyperglycemia causes intraoperative complications

Ovarian cancer surgery is very traumatic. Patients with diabetes under stress are prone to myocardial infarction and heart failure, and may also cause high blood pressure. A series of complications during surgery are not conducive to the smooth progress of ovarian cancer surgery, and may even reduce the quality of life after surgery. Therefore, patients should actively adjust their medication and control blood sugar before surgery to avoid other complications.
