Ms. Zhao, 52 years old, was first diagnosed on December 30, 1991. Main complaint: ascites, edema of face and feet for 3 months, accompanied by low fever and night sweats (ovarian cancer metastasis to the pelvis and abdomen). Medical history: Since early September 1991, she has felt low back pain, abdominal distension, nausea, etc., followed by ascites, and her condition worsened. She was treated in the surgical department of a provincial hospital. After B-ultrasound, CT and other examinations, she was diagnosed with ovarian pain with late pelvic and abdominal metastasis. Ascites is obvious, urinary retention, initially with furosemide 20~60mg/d, intravenous push, still effective, but gradually ineffective. She had severe chest and abdominal distension, dry mouth, bloated abdomen, low fever, night sweats, increasingly thin, and physical exhaustion. She has received blood transfusions twice. In the past 20 hours, she has eaten very little, and her condition has worsened. The doctors in charge found it very difficult and thought there was no hope. Out of desperation, Ms. Zhao's family held a glimmer of hope and sought help from traditional Chinese medicine. TCM examination: pale complexion, fatigue, lazy speech, distended abdomen, puffy face, cold limbs, swollen feet and sunken fingers, pale tongue, grayish yellow fur, deep and thin pulse. After the examination, the diagnosis was ovarian cancer, which was due to spleen and kidney yang deficiency and internal retention of dampness. Although the disease was serious, the treatment with warming yang and promoting water, Zhenwu Decoction with added ingredients, was effective. Prescription: Radix Aconiti Lateralis (pre-decocted), Atractylodes macrocephala, Poria with skin, White Peony Root, Ginger, Wax Gourd Peel, Morus alba bark, Plantago seed, Radix Dikuro. After taking 3 doses, the patient had a second visit on January 3, 1992: After taking 2 doses of the above medicine, the patient urinated about 400ml/d, had dry mouth, and felt tired. Remove the Radix Dikuro from the above formula, and add Astragalus and Dendrobium officinale. After taking 5 doses, the patient was re-examined (with family members as spokesperson): urine output increased, swelling of the face and feet gradually subsided, dry mouth improved, and diuretics such as furosemide were discontinued. Add red ginseng (decoction separately) to the above formula, take 5 doses, and on January 23, the patient had a third visit: urination was smooth, ascites and swelling of the face and feet subsided significantly, and physical signs were greatly improved. Remove the wax gourd peel, mulberry bark, etc. from the above formula, and add Polyporus, Gynostemma pentaphyllum, Coix seed, etc., and continue for 2 months. The patient's condition was stable and he was discharged from the hospital in early March. |
