Two things to note after radical surgery for colorectal cancer

I am a 54-year-old female colon cancer patient who has undergone radical surgery for colon cancer and received three chemotherapy sessions after surgery. I would like to know what I should pay attention to in terms of post-operative recuperation.

Although radical surgery is the most effective treatment for colorectal cancer, continued radiotherapy and chemotherapy after surgery can effectively control the spread and metastasis of the tumor. Late-stage treatment focuses on physical recovery and prevention of recurrence and metastasis. Attention should be paid to dietary adjustment and regular hospital check-ups.

Nutrition and Diet after Surgery

In principle, it should be high in calories, protein, and vitamins to meet the needs of surgical consumption and tissue repair. However, patients with weak digestion and absorption should be given high-energy foods that are easy to digest after surgery, and animal fat should not be too much. The amount of high-protein supplementation should be sufficient and of high quality. Eggs, milk, broth, and soy products are recommended. Vitamins can be supplemented through medication during hospitalization to make up for the lack of vitamin supply in the diet.

Regular postoperative check-ups are essential

After colorectal cancer surgery, you should take medication as prescribed by the doctor to prevent anemia. Other auxiliary treatments should also be carried out according to the specific situation, such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy and traditional Chinese medicine treatment. More importantly, you must have regular follow-up examinations, such as stool occult blood, gastrointestinal fluoroscopy, intestinal fiber endoscopy, ultrasound and chest X-ray, so as to detect the recurrence or metastasis of colorectal cancer as early as possible.
