Relationship between tumor vascular density and prognosis of laryngeal cancer

Although cancer is a difficult disease to cure, with the development of medical technology, laryngeal cancer patients can be treated through surgery. Patients who undergo surgery are very concerned about the prognosis of laryngeal cancer , the degree of health recovery after the operation and other factors. Medical experts have found that the density of tumor microvessels is inseparable from the prognosis of laryngeal cancer.

Among those with squamous cell laryngeal cancer, tumors with poor vascularity have a better laryngeal cancer prognosis, researchers say. Factors that significantly affect the disease-free rate are the anatomical site of the tumor, its spread, and the patient's clinical tumor stage. Researchers from the University of Milan designed a study to determine the clinicopathological and prognostic relevance of microvessel density in head and neck tumors. Participants included 122 consecutive patients who underwent surgical intervention for squamous cell laryngeal cancer and were followed up for an average of 79 months. Microvessel density in 3.250x microscopic fields after CD34 immunostaining represented hot spots and was expressed as the mean number of blood vessels counted per square millimeter. The overall mean number of blood vessels counted within the tumor was 69.5/square millimeter. The analysis of 20 patients showed a significant increase in microvessel density from normal to abnormal mucosa and invasive cancer. In 19 cancers (15.65%), microvessel density values were found to be equal to or lower than the highest microvessel density value observed in normal mucosa and were therefore considered to have poor vascularity.

The above is the relationship between the microvascular density of the tumor and the prognosis of laryngeal cancer. It is hoped that through comprehensive examinations, patients can have a positive attitude towards the treatment of laryngeal cancer by understanding the condition of the tumor. A better prognosis will increase the success rate of laryngeal cancer treatment from a psychological perspective.
