Anemia is one of the early symptoms of colorectal cancer

However, as the disease progresses, a series of early symptoms of colorectal cancer may appear. Since most of the early symptoms of colorectal cancer are asymptomatic, or only manifest as symptoms of precancerous lesions, the common early symptoms of colorectal cancer are as follows:

(1) Anemia: When long-term chronic blood loss exceeds the body's hematopoietic compensatory function, patients may develop anemia, an early symptom of colorectal cancer. Generally speaking, the later the disease is, the more frequent and severe the anemia is.

Anemia is not necessarily a late symptom. For example, 34.9% and 50.9% of patients with stage I and II colon cancer treated in this hospital had hemoglobin levels below 100 g/L, respectively. In particular, right-sided colon cancer often presents anemia as an early symptom of colorectal cancer, so clinicians must not give up active surgical treatment simply because of anemia.

(2) Blood in the stool: The stool in the lower large intestine is dry and hard, so blood in the stool is the most common early symptom of colorectal cancer. Because the lesion is close to the anus, the blood is often bright red or dark red, and the blood and stool are often separated.

However, the stool in the right colon is still in a semi-fluid state, so the amount of bleeding in right colon cancer is relatively small. In addition, the color of the stool changes after the blood is mixed in, so it is not easy for patients to detect the early symptoms of colorectal cancer. Most of them are positive for occult blood. Only when the amount of bleeding is large can the stool be seen to be brown and jam-like. Among the right colon cancer patients admitted to the Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Fudan University, 36.5% had visible blood in the stool.
