What is the protruding bone in the waist called

When a person bends his waist, the bones of the waist will protrude. What are the names of the protruding bones of the waist? They are part of the lumbar vertebrae, called the spinous process. They are generally more obvious in thin people. Bones play an important role in the human body. First of all, they protect the internal organs. The spine supports the human body. People cannot stand, walk and work without the support of bones. Let’s take a closer look at the functions of human bones.

The spinous process is an anatomical term and is a part of the spine. It is formed by the confluence of the vertebral plates on both sides at the midline and extends backwards. Its end is bulging and pear-shaped at the bottom. That is, the most protruding bony part in the middle of the back spine when you touch it from top to bottom with your hand. The spinous process is used to attach the yellow ligament, supraspinous ligament, interspinous ligament and nuchal ligament, and cooperates with the anterior longitudinal ligament and posterior longitudinal ligament to protect the firmness and stability of the vertebral body.

There are many muscles and ligaments attached to and around the spinous process. Therefore, the importance of the spinous process plays a vital role in the movement itself and acts as a lever.

The width and length of the spinous processes vary from person to person. Some people's spinous processes are too narrow or too short, resulting in abnormal lumbar extension. Some people's spinous processes are too long or too wide, and the spinous processes can contact each other when standing upright, preventing the posterior movement of the spine. False joints can form between these spinous processes, and sometimes these false joints often collide with each other, causing osteoarthritis and chronic low back pain. During treatment, conventional combination injection therapy is performed at the site of osteoarthritis, which can achieve good results. Those with frequent recurring attacks and severe pain can undergo surgery, such as partial spinous process resection, which can often achieve satisfactory results.
