How to extract bone marrow

How to extract bone marrow

In daily life, we often see on TV that many leukemia patients are suffering from pain and many leukemia patients are waiting for bone marrow transplantation. However, we all know that it is not easy to find suitable bone marrow. Although many people are willing to donate their bone marrow, there are too many people who need help. In fact, donating bone marrow will not affect your health. So how to extract bone marrow?

Bone marrow transplantation refers to the transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow from one person to another (usually through intravenous infusion). To be precise, bone marrow transplantation is the transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells.

Serious diseases of the human blood system and immune system, such as leukemia (commonly known as blood cancer). For patients with lymphoma, aplastic anemia, thalassemia, and severe radiation sickness, the only hope for continued survival is a bone marrow transplant. Every year in my country, about 4 million patients with various diseases are waiting for bone marrow transplants.

Donation will not affect your health

Donating bone marrow will not affect a person's health. Many people think that donating bone marrow is the same as extracting spinal cord, which is a complete misunderstanding. Bone marrow transplantation requires red bone marrow in the human body - hematopoietic stem cells. The hematopoietic stem cells of an adult are 3 kilograms. A donor can provide less than 10 grams of bone marrow stem cells to save a leukemia patient without weakening his or her immune and hematopoietic abilities. Bone marrow is a tissue with strong regeneration capacity. For healthy donors, the amount of donated stem cells can be replenished in about 10 days.

Steps to donating bone marrow

1) After registration, the bone marrow bank or the Red Cross will arrange for you to test 5 ml of blood and store the HLA typing results in the Chinese Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donor Database for patients to find matches.

2) If the donor and recipient have the same preliminary matching, the staff of the bone marrow bank will explain the donation process to you in detail and ask you to undergo a full-body examination.

Bone marrow extraction

There are two methods to extract hematopoietic stem cells from the bone marrow: one is that the doctor punctures the donor's iliac bone to collect hematopoietic stem cells from the bone marrow. There will be some pain within one or two days after the operation, but full recovery will occur within a week. The second is to use scientific methods to effectively mobilize hematopoietic stem cells from the bone marrow and other parts and release them into the peripheral blood in large quantities. The blood is collected from the donor's arm vein, separated by a machine, and the remaining blood is returned to the donor's body.
