Symptoms of mild formaldehyde poisoning

Symptoms of mild formaldehyde poisoning

Formaldehyde is a chemical substance that is toxic and has a certain destructive effect on human health. Living in an environment rich in formaldehyde for a long time can easily induce serious blood system diseases and endanger people's lives. Formaldehyde is almost everywhere in our lives, and many people suffer from mild formaldehyde poisoning symptoms. Let’s take a look at the symptoms of mild formaldehyde poisoning.

Mild poisoning symptoms

When the patient suffers from mild poisoning, the specific symptoms include conjunctival congestion, hoarse speech, difficulty breathing, and breathing sounds that are louder than usual. Another specific symptom of mild formaldehyde poisoning is one to two degrees of throat edema. The eyes will feel obvious irritation. By taking X-rays, you will find that the texture of the lungs begins to become more numerous and coarser, which is a typical symptom of acute bronchitis in medical terms.

Different indoor formaldehyde concentrations result in different poisoning symptoms

The different symptoms of poisoning are mainly determined by the formaldehyde concentration in the room. Different formaldehyde concentrations in the air will cause different symptoms.

1. When the formaldehyde content in each cubic meter of air reaches 30mg/m3, it will cause direct poisoning and death.

2. When the formaldehyde content in each cubic meter of air reaches 0.6mg/m3, the human body will experience throat pain and obvious discomfort. When the concentration is higher than this value, the symptoms will be more obvious, manifested as chest tightness, nausea, coughing, and vomiting. In severe cases, problems such as asthma and pulmonary edema may occur.

3. When the formaldehyde content in each cubic meter of air reaches 0.5mg/m3, the eyes will be obviously irritated and tears will appear.

4. When the formaldehyde content in each cubic meter of air reaches 0.1mg/m3, the air will have a distinct odor and there will be obvious discomfort when entering.

5. When the formaldehyde content in each cubic meter of air reaches 0.06-0.07 mg/m3, children will suffer from mild asthma.

What to do if you are poisoned by formaldehyde

1. For those with mild poisoning, it is recommended to leave the environment containing formaldehyde immediately and change contaminated clothing. Rinse whole body with plenty of water immediately. And clean with soapy water or 2% sodium bicarbonate solution. If it gets into eyes accidentally, rinse with plenty of water.

2. For those with moderate poisoning, let them inhale 0.1% dilute ammonia water. In order to quickly eliminate throat edema and pulmonary edema caused by poisoning, it is recommended to use sufficient amounts of glucocorticoids for a short period of time in the early stages of treatment.
