How can mangoes ripen quickly

How can mangoes ripen quickly

Mango is a tropical fruit and is not easy to preserve. This leads to many people picking mangoes that are not too ripe for easy transportation or preservation. Because of this reason, the mangoes people buy on the market are not ripe and they need to wait for a while before they can be eaten. But that time is sometimes quite long, so is there any way to make mangoes ripen quickly? Today I give some methods that may be effective for you.

1. Use ripe fruits to ripen

Select ripe apples or ripe bananas, put the apples or bananas together with green mangoes into a plastic bag and tie the mouth tightly. You can cover it with cloth to block out light. Then put it in a warm place. Check the ripeness regularly. In a few days, the mangoes will turn yellow and ripe. However, the editor recommends using apples and bananas as they are prone to rot.

2. Ripening green mangoes with rice

Using rice to ripen mangoes is a common method used at home, because rice also produces some ethylene gas when stored, and this ethylene is an important substance for ripening green mangoes. Therefore, put the green mangoes you bought directly into the rice bucket, cover it with a lid, and take them out after a few days and the mangoes will be ripe.

3. Use drugs to ripen green mangoes

Ethephon is one of the most commonly used ripening drugs. This drug does not cause much harm to humans when used in small amounts. You can dilute it and spray it directly on the surface of the green mango, and then cover the green mango with some objects. After two days, the green mango will all turn yellow. However, the editor does not recommend its use. All medicines are toxic. It is better to wait a few more days and use less.

4. High temperature ripening method

Mango can produce ethylene gas on its own, and this respiration is greatly affected by temperature. Therefore, you can put the mangoes in a cardboard box, seal it, and place it in a place with higher temperature. Open it and check it every day to prevent it from rotting. After about three days, the mangoes in the box will be ripe and can be taken out and eaten directly.

How to tell if a mango is ripe

Smell and texture are two of the best signs that a mango is ripe. You can tell something from the appearance of the mango, but you can't judge it based on appearance alone. Before you decide to cut open a newly purchased mango, make sure it is truly ripe enough to enjoy.

1. Look at the shape.

For most varieties of mango, round or football-shaped ones are better than flat ones.

2. Look at the fruit stem.

The flesh and skin around the fruit stem should be bulging and relatively round. [2]

Before a mango is ripe, the stem will become quite flat on one end. The pulp, juices and sugars inside are not yet fully ripe. Once the mango has finished growing and is ripe, the flesh should be plump and the stem should be slightly raised rather than flat.

Note: Don’t just look at the color.

The red color usually only shows how much sunlight the mango has received, not its freshness. Moreover, different varieties of mangoes have different colors when ripe. You shouldn't rely solely on color to determine whether a mango is ripe.

3. Judge by smell

Your sense of taste and smell are closely linked, and the smell of something greatly affects how it tastes. Smell the area around the fruit stem to see if there is any fragrance. If there is a strong fruity aroma, you will immediately think of the sweet taste of mango. Mangoes with this sweet and fruity aroma are usually ripe.

Note: Mangoes are very high in sugar compared to other fruits, and when mangoes start to go bad, the pulp starts to ferment and smell sour and alcoholic. Don't eat this kind of mango anymore.
