Identification of Jade Quality

There are six standards for identifying the quality of jade, namely "color, transparency, uniformity, shape, knocking and reflection".

(1) Color

Green is the best color of jade. The value of red and purple jade is only 1/5 of that of green jade. If the jade contains the four colors of red, purple, green and white, it is called "Fu Lu Shou Xi"; if it only contains the three colors of red, green and white, it is called "Fu Lu Shou". Those with dull, yellowish color are inferior quality. If it is a single-color jade, it is better to choose one with uniform color.

(2) Transparency

The best quality ones are transparent and crystal clear like glass, without any dirt or spots, and not bran or astringent. Translucent and opaque jade are called intermediate jade and ordinary jade respectively. In the Qing Dynasty and before, jade with three colors of red, green and white was called jadeite. In modern times, jadeite refers to general transparent jade. The current jadeite is transparent with a green color.

(3) Uniform

The most important thing about jade is uniformity of color. Even if it contains white and green but the color is uneven, its value is very low.

(4) Shape

The shape of jade can be processed into different styles according to different aesthetic requirements, without any special standards. Generally speaking, the bigger the jade, the better.

(5) Knock

There are often fractures and cuts in jade, which are generally difficult to observe. However, if you knock on it with a metal rod or gently throw the jade onto a table, you can tell whether there are cracks by the clarity of the sound. The crisper the sound, the better.

(6) Photo

There are black spots and flaws in the jade that are difficult to see with the naked eye, but they can be seen clearly by using a 10x magnifying glass.

The quality of jade can be divided into 10 levels, and each level can be further divided into 3 grades: upper, middle and lower. Among them, white jade has the lowest value regardless of its color or transparency.

The characteristic of natural jade is that it is slightly lighter in color, without the light blue color (commonly known as evil color). There is also another kind of synthetic jade, which is made of jade powder, crystal and salt water, and its appearance is quite similar to the dark "old pit jade". The identification method is very simple. Because its specific gravity is different from that of natural jade, you can weigh it by hand or use a scale to weigh it. The heavier one is real jade.
