Personal hair hygiene is also a part of personal hygiene. In daily life, human sebaceous sweat glands need to sweat. The sweat after sweating often adheres to the hair, which is easy to harbor dirt. If you don’t wash your hair for a long time, it will not only emit an unpleasant odor, but may also cause many symptoms of skin diseases in patients. So what are the precautions for washing a patient’s hair?

【Purpose】

1. Removes dandruff and dirt, keeps hair clean and reduces the chance of infection.

2. Massage the scalp to promote blood circulation and hair growth and metabolism.

3. Promote patient comfort, enhance physical and mental health, and build a bridge for establishing a good nurse-patient relationship.

【Evaluate】

1. The operation can only be performed if the patient's condition, vital signs and consciousness permit.

2. The patient's self-care ability and hair condition, personal hygiene habits, whether there is scalp itching, damage, and lice and nit egg infection, etc.

3. Patient acceptance and cooperation.

【Prepare】

1. Nurse preparation

(1) Keep your clothes neat, trim your nails, and wash your hands.

(2) Be familiar with the relevant knowledge of hair care and the operation techniques of shampooing in bed, and explain to patients the importance of hair care, the purpose of shampooing in bed and the precautions.

2. Preparation

(1) The treatment tray should contain: large and small rubber sheets, bath towels, gauze, towels, pins, 2 non-absorbent cotton balls or earplugs, comb, shampoo, and measuring cup.

(2) Treatment tray equipment: rubber horseshoe roll or homemade horseshoe pad, kettle (filled with 40-45℃ hot water, or adjusted according to the patient's habits), washbasin or sewage bucket, and a hair dryer when needed.

3. Patient preparation

(1) Understand the purpose, methods, precautions and key points of shampooing.

(2) Provide toilets as needed to assist patients in defecation.

4. For environmental preparation, move the bedside table and chairs, close doors and windows, and adjust the room temperature to 22-26℃.

1. Pour a little hot water from a duckbill kettle or cup onto the patient's head to wet the hair, and ask the patient if the water temperature is appropriate;

2Pour a small amount of shampoo on the palm of your hand, rub your hands together, and then use both hands to rub your hair and scalp, and rub from the hairline to the top of the head;

3. Use a comb to comb through your hair to remove any lost hair, and place the lost hair in a paper bag;

4 Rinse your hair with hot water and repeat as needed until it is clean;

5. Remove the shampoo, eye mask, and cotton balls in the ears, wipe the water off the face, and loosen the towel around the neck;

6 Help the patient lie in the middle, move the pillow, rubber sheet and bath towel from the shoulders to the head, wrap the hair with the bath towel and dry it. Remove the bath towel and eraser, comb the hair to make it easier to spread or use a hair dryer to dry the hair, and fix the hairstyle according to the patient's habits or needs;

7. Straighten the pillow and place it under the head to help the patient lie in a comfortable position. Make the bed and other belongings.

【Notes】

1. Keep warm and avoid water splashing into your eyes and ears.

2. Do not wash your hair for too long to prevent congestion and fatigue in the head, which may cause discomfort.

3. During the shampooing process, observe changes in the condition at any time, such as complexion, pulse, breathing, etc. If there is any abnormality, stop the operation immediately and give treatment.

4. Extremely weak patients and patients with intracranial hemorrhage should not wash their hair.

1. Explain to patients the purpose of hair cleansing and how clean hair can maintain a good appearance, improve physical and mental well-being, and enhance self-confidence.

2. Instruct patients to choose appropriate shampoo.

3. Guide family members to acquire the knowledge and skills of hair washing for bedridden patients.
