How long can activated carbon be used

I believe many people are familiar with activated carbon, which is something that can absorb a variety of harmful substances. In daily home life, many people use activated carbon to remove indoor formaldehyde to create a healthier living environment for themselves and their families. However, activated carbon has a certain shelf life. Below, I will give you a detailed introduction to the use of activated carbon.

1. What is activated carbon?

Activated carbon is a type of microcrystalline carbon material made of carbon-containing materials, which has a black appearance, a developed internal pore structure, a large specific surface area and strong adsorption capacity. It is a commonly used adsorbent, catalyst or catalyst carrier. Activated carbon can be divided into: wood activated carbon, fruit shell activated carbon, animal bone/blood activated carbon, mineral raw material activated carbon, synthetic resin activated carbon, rubber/plastic activated carbon, regenerated activated carbon, etc. according to the source of raw materials; activated carbon can be divided into: powdery, granular, irregular granular, cylindrical, spherical and fibrous, etc. according to its appearance. Activated carbon has a wide range of applications, and its uses involve almost all sectors of the national economy and people's daily lives, such as water purification, gold extraction, sugar solution decolorization, pharmaceutical injection refining, blood purification, air purification, human safety protection, etc.

2. How long can activated carbon be used?

Under normal conditions, we cannot accurately judge how long activated carbon can be used. Because the saturation period of activated carbon, that is, the service life of activated carbon, is related to the severity of harmful gases in the absorbed substances and the frequency of desorption of the adsorbed substances. However, some studies have shown that after about 20 days of use, you should take out the activated carbon and expose it to sunlight for about three hours.

When the sunlight is weak, you may need to expose it to the sun for an extra hour or two. This will desorb the adsorbed water molecules and release a large amount of space occupied by them inside the activated carbon. This way, you can use it repeatedly for 6-10 months.

3. The role of activated carbon

1. Utilizing the dual properties of physical adsorption and chemical adsorption of activated carbon, after a special pore size adjustment process, it has a pore structure that matches the molecular size of indoor harmful gases, completely adsorbing harmful gases instead of covering or diluting the odor, fundamentally and thoroughly eliminating indoor pollution.

2. Activated carbon can adsorb all harmful gas molecules in the room, and at the same time has functions such as regulating catalysis. It can effectively adsorb various harmful gases formed in the air, such as benzene, formaldehyde, ketones, acids and other organic components and floating bacteria in the air, kill pathogenic bacteria such as mold, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and pus bacteria, and inhibit the spread of epidemic pathogens. It has comprehensive functions such as detoxification, odor absorption, deodorization, dehumidification, mildew prevention, sterilization, and purification.

3. Indoor pollution caused by decoration and renovation, the volatilization of formaldehyde, benzene, toluene, ammonia and other pollution sources is a slow release process, and will even last for 3 to 15 years. The window ventilation method, chemical spraying method, flower removal method, etc. can only quickly cover or disperse the volatilized harmful gases, but cannot fundamentally remove the slowly released harmful gases. The adsorption process of activated carbon is a long-term and stable process, which basically coincides with the release process of harmful gases, thereby achieving the effect of complete removal.
