What is the humerus

The humerus is the thickest bone in our upper limbs. This bone is very important to us because it is connected to our shoulder blade. So if we have frozen shoulder, it is very easy to cause humeral diseases. Most bone diseases may cause potential harm to the patient's body. So what is the humerus?

What is the humerus?

1. The humerus is the thickest bone in the upper limb. The upper end forms the shoulder joint with the scapula, and the lower end forms the elbow joint with the radius and ulna. The upper end of the humerus is composed of the humeral head, humeral neck, greater tuberosity and lesser tuberosity. The spherical humeral head articulates with the glenoid cavity of the scapula.

2. The shallow annular groove around the humeral head, which separates the humeral head from the greater and lesser tuberosities, is called the anatomical neck of the humerus. The junction of the neck and the body of the humerus is the greater and lesser tuberosities, which provide attachment points and levers for some of the scapulohumeral muscles.

What are the functions of the humerus?

1. There is a rough protrusion on the outer side of the middle part of the humerus, called the deltoid tuberosity. There is a shallow groove on the back of the body that runs obliquely from the inside to the outside, called the radial nerve groove, through which the radial nerve passes. Therefore, fractures of the middle part of the humerus may injure this nerve.

2. The lower end of the humerus is flat front to back, with two articular surfaces at the end. The medial one is the humeral trochlea, and the lateral one is the humeral capitulum. There is an olecranon fossa above and behind the trochlea to accommodate the olecranon of the ulna when the elbow is extended.

People can estimate the growth and development of the fetus in a pregnant woman's belly by the size of the humerus, so the humerus plays a very important role in the human body. The normal movement of the arm is also inseparable from the existence of the humerus, which allows one to freely control one's fingers to get what one wants and also maintains the balance of the upper body.
