What is the reason for eye mucus?

People say that eyes are windows to the soul, and you can tell a lot about a person by looking into his or her eyes. However, some people often have eye mucus in their eyes inadvertently. Whenever they find this, they often wonder, haven't they washed their eyes? Why is there still eye mucus? More people believe that eye mucus is because they did not wash their eyes thoroughly, but is this really the case? Let's take a look at the reasons for eye mucus.

First, let’s understand how eye mucus is formed.

Regarding eye boogers, I believe most people have a question. I cleaned it before going to bed, but why is it still there when I wake up the next day?

In fact, eye boogers are a kind of oil secreted by the eyelids (cartilage-like substance on the eyelids) to prevent lubricating eye mucus from flowing out of the eyes and sweat from flowing into the eyes. After a long sleep, oil mixes with dust and impurities in the eyes to form a substance.

Generally speaking, there will be some eye mucus when you wake up in the morning, but the amount is usually not too large and is white or light yellow in color. If you wake up in the morning and find that there is a lot of eye mucus, almost covering your eyes, then it is very likely that you have a disease.

Does excessive eye mucus indicate health problems?

My good friend Xiaomei has been feeling more eye mucus recently, and sometimes her eyes are covered with it. At first I thought it was a sore throat, so I drank a lot of chrysanthemum tea but it didn’t help. I waited until my eyes turned red and painful before rushing to the hospital for treatment, only to find out that it was acute conjunctivitis that caused the problem.

Ps: The doctor kindly reminds everyone that the increase in eye mucus is not necessarily caused by getting angry. If there is any abnormality in your eyes, it is recommended to go to the hospital for treatment in time.

Due to historical reasons and other reasons, we often think that the increase in eye mucus is related to "getting angry". But we must understand that most of the eye mucus represents eye inflammation, and some antibacterial and antiviral treatment drugs should be used according to the condition. You cannot simply conclude that you have a fever, so as not to delay the treatment of the disease.

Different eye mucus represents different diseases

Under normal circumstances, the human body will secrete a certain amount of eye mucus, but it will not be there all day long. Only when you suffer from an eye disease will the amount of eye mucus increase or the color or shape change. Medical scientists can diagnose different eye diseases based on different manifestations:

1. Purulent eye mucus - bacterial infection

The appearance of purulent secretions often indicates bacterial infection and you should go to the hospital for treatment in time.

2. Bloody eye mucus: eye trauma

If light pink or obviously blood-red discharge appears in the eyes, the possibility of eye trauma should be considered.

3. Sticky eye mucus - dry eyes, allergic conjunctivitis

The main symptoms are itchy eyes, foreign body sensation, and sticky white filamentous eye secretions. Trachoma can be treated with antibacterial eye drops such as ofloxacin eye drops.

4. Watery eye mucus: viral conjunctivitis

Viral conjunctivitis is suspected when symptoms include conjunctival congestion, watery secretions, pharyngeal irritation, and the upper and lower eyelids sticking together upon waking up. For treatment, eye drops such as taurine eye drops can be used.

Kind tips:

Viral conjunctivitis is highly contagious. Once diagnosed, people should be isolated in a timely manner and pay attention to personal hygiene to avoid infection.
