What's the matter with eye mucus in the morning

As we all know, every morning, eye boogers appear in the corners of our eyes. Sometimes, eye mucus is actually a normal excretion of the body. But more often than not, if we find a large amount of eye mucus or it is relatively sticky, it is likely caused by a disease. So, what is the cause of eye mucus in the morning? Let’s see what the doctor says!

The formation of eye mucus

There is a "tarsal plate" inside our eyelids. It is located at the edge of the eyelids, close to the eyelashes, and secretes a oil-like liquid day and night. During the day, the oil secreted by the eyelids is applied to the edges of the eyelids through blinking, which can provide a certain degree of protection for the eyes. When we close our eyes to sleep at night, the tarsal plates continue to work. At this time, the oil it secretes mixes with the dust that enters the eyes during the day and impurities in the tears, and accumulates in the corners of the eyes to form eye boogers.

My baby's eyes are sticky and there is a lot of eye mucus in the morning. Does this mean he has an eye disease?

Normal people will have a small amount of eye mucus every day, which is a normal physiological phenomenon. The eye secretions of healthy people mainly come from the lacrimal glands, meibomian glands, mucus secreted by ocular surface cells and desquamated ocular surface epithelial cells. Most of them are transparent or pale white and are usually not easy to detect. Because the amount of secretions is small and can be discharged from the tear duct in time, it will not cause eye discomfort. But if the number increases suddenly, it may be caused by getting angry. Especially in autumn and winter, the dry weather can easily cause the human body to lack water, causing inflammation and increased eye mucus; secondly, it can cause eye diseases. If the amount of eye mucus suddenly increases and is yellow-white, pink or red in color, it may be caused by a bacterial infection that leads to eye diseases such as conjunctivitis or trachoma.

Small countermeasures: If the increase in eye mucus is caused by getting angry, you can eat more vegetables and fruits, drink more water, get enough rest, and don’t stay up late. If the amount of eye mucus increases and sticks to the eyes, causing you to be unable to open your eyes, it is best to go to the hospital for a check-up and use medication according to your condition.

Tips: To prevent eye diseases, you must pay attention to eye care, combine work and rest, and try not to face the computer for long periods of time. After working for an hour or two, you can take a proper break and relax your eyes. Blink more often to avoid dry eyes.

Other reasons for morning eye mucus

People with a hot constitution: People with active sebaceous glands and those with atopic dermatitis are more likely to have excessive eye mucus. People who eat greasy food or have a hot constitution also have more eye discharge.

Conjunctivitis: Conjunctivitis caused by bacteria or virus infection, in addition to red eyes, there is also a large amount of secretions, sometimes so much that the eyes are stuck and cannot be opened. The secretions are usually thick white or yellow.

Blepharitis: If makeup is not cleaned thoroughly, especially eyeliner or mascara, which are oily items, it is easy to cause the oil pores on the edge of the eyelashes to be blocked. When blockage occurs, the edge of the eyelid will first feel itchy and stinging, and secretions will proliferate and bacteria will grow at the root of the eyelashes, causing inflammation, increased secretions, and a vicious cycle.

Warm reminder: When there is too much eye mucus in the eyes, do not use folk remedies or wash your eyes with medicine on your own. This may cause the condition to worsen. You should go to the hospital to check the specific condition and then prescribe the right medicine.
