How to clean and maintain fur

How to clean and maintain fur

Fur clothes are mainly made of the fur of animals such as fox, rabbit, mink, beaver, otter, raccoon dog, etc. Compared with ordinary clothes, fur is warmer and looks more beautiful, but the corresponding price is high. Therefore, when you buy a nice fur coat, it is important to do regular maintenance and cleaning. So, how to clean and maintain fur? Let’s take a detailed look at the methods below.

Indoor storage of fur

(1) Do not place fur near windows with strong sunlight. It is best to hang it in a place with dim light, low temperature and humidity, and good ventilation. Make sure there are no hot water or steam pipes near where your clothes are stored, and don't forget that fur likes a dry environment.

(2) Fur clothing should be hung on a special hanger with high strength and wide shoulders, covered with a silk cover, and stored in a closet with good air circulation. A high hanger prevents the collar from falling on the shoulders, broad shoulders keep the garment crisp, and silk covers provide good ventilation for the fur.

(3) Advocate giving fur space to "breathe". Fur needs a relatively large space to store, and there should be at least 6 cm of space between it and other clothes to allow the fur to "breathe" freely. Never put fur in plastic bags or fold it and press it tightly in a suitcase. Without air circulation, the fur will become unevenly dry and wet, deformed, or even fall off.

(4) Do not contaminate fur with other chemicals. If your home is infested with moths or other insects, do not use insecticides near fur, as these can also be harmful to fur. Never store a fur coat in a wardrobe made of cedar. Although cedar can repel insects, the smell that permeates the fur will make you regret it.

(5) In summer, it is best to hand over the fur to a professional fur shop and place it in a cold storage, or in an air-conditioned room at home, to avoid damage from high temperature, humidity, insects and ants.

Fur outdoor protection

(1) Fur undoubtedly belongs to winter. When wearing fur clothing, please stay away from heat sources, especially heaters, because dry heat will absorb the substances in the fur, making the fur hard and brittle.

(2) Pay special attention when dining in a restaurant. It is best not to leave fur clothing in the check-in area because the space there is too small. You can fold the fur carefully and place it on a chair, and ask the waiter to wrap it with a large cover instead of hanging it on a hook or rack. Simply put, fur needs a place when you eat, but it needs to be away from the table.

(3) If you are sitting in a car or in a movie theater for a long time, it is best to take off your fur clothing to avoid stressing it. When folding, make sure the fur side faces outwards.

(4) Be careful about whether the items you carry with you may damage the fur. For example, the straps of a handbag, especially those with metal chains, can wear out the fur. If you often carry a briefcase, be careful not to let the bag come into contact with fur for a long time.

(5) There are some details that cannot be ignored, such as not buckling anything on the fur, and paying attention to whether the metal on the watch or bracelet often rubs against the cuffs of the fur garment.

(6) Wearing a silk scarf can prevent the oil and makeup on your skin from staining the collar of your leather jacket. If you accidentally leave makeup on your fur, be careful when removing it, and it is usually better to take your fur to a professional.

Fur care tips

1. Prevent fur from getting wet or exposed to heat

The biggest enemies of fur are strong sunlight and humid air, so when placing fur, we should try to avoid high temperature, direct sunlight and hot and humid environment. It is best to keep the room temperature at more than 10 degrees and put some moisture-removing things.

2. Place in a ventilated place

When storing fur clothes, keep the air flowing. It is best not to use airtight bags. If necessary, cover the fur with a large cloth bag to keep out the dust.

3. Stay away from chemicals

When wearing fur clothing, try not to spray perfume or hairspray on the fur, because these substances contain alcohol and will dry out the fur.

4. Do not blindly modify the style

Some customers like to do their own sewing and sew accessories onto the fur garment, which can easily cause the fur garment to be pierced. Avoid carrying certain leather bags to prevent the backpack straps from rubbing against the fur and damaging the fur.

5. Be careful when cleaning

Fur clothing generally uses chemical raw materials in the production process. Chemical reactions easily occur when it comes into contact with water and other liquids, causing the leather to deform and harden, or the fur to fade and discolor. Therefore, fur cannot be cleaned by ordinary methods and should be sent to a professional dry cleaner for cleaning. This is the only way to keep the fur clothing smooth, beautiful and new for a long time.

6. There are also some rules for hanging fur clothes

Fur should be hung on a hanger with shoulder pads or a large hanger with wide shoulders. Never use a wire hanger to avoid damaging or deforming the fur.

7. Prevent moth damage

Fur clothing is all made from the fur of rabbits, rex rabbits, foxes, sheep, and minks. It is rich in protein and easily infested with insects and corroded. Therefore, you should pay special attention to mildew and insect infestation. If conditions permit, you can consider storing it in a refrigerator in the summer.

8. What should I do if the fur is torn?

If it is accidentally torn or ripped, you can just sew it yourself or take it to a sewing shop. When sewing, use a hand needle to sew directly on the outside of the fur. After sewing, comb it with a comb and you're done.

As long as you take good care of it, your fur garment can be worn for many years and will never fade or lose its shape!

Fur cleaning method

Fur is a combination of skin and fur, which can be divided into four categories according to its economic value: small fine fur, large fine fur, coarse fine fur and mixed fine fur. The first two categories are precious furs, such as weasel, sable, otter, musk deer, civet, gray mouse, bamboo rat, chipmunk/fox, raccoon dog, lynx, muskrat, mink, etc. The latter two categories are common furs, such as sheep, goats, wolves, dogs, tigers/civets, rabbits, etc. Since fur is troublesome to wash, the washing cycle is generally very long.

1. High-end fur cleaning (mink fur)

Detergent powder: magnesium oxide powder and talcum powder in a ratio of 1:1.

Washing method: Spread the fur flat on the washboard, use a sponge to dip the powder and evenly apply it to the quilt, repeatedly apply it to the dirty parts, let it stand for 24 hours, use a brush to clean the powder, then put the fur on the portrait air model, use an air spray gun to blow off the powder, and use a dense-tooth comb to dredge the quilt in the forward direction.

2. Ordinary fur cleaning (sheepskin)

Washing solvent: 95% alcohol. Common dosage: 200-250ml alcohol.

Detergent powder: Common dosage of talcum powder: 500-1000 grams of talcum powder.

Washing method: Put the fur on the portrait air model, use an air spray gun to evenly atomize the alcohol solvent onto the quilt, dip a sponge in the powder and repeatedly apply it to the quilt, rub it gently, use a brush to sweep the powder off the quilt, then use an air spray gun to blow the powder off, and use a sparse-tooth comb to dredge and sort the quilt in the forward direction.

3. Yellowing of white plush

Washing solution: hydrogen peroxide: water ratio 1:10.

Washing method: Put the fur on the portrait air model, use an air spray gun to evenly atomize the solution onto the fur, fully wet it for 5 minutes, use a short-bristled brush dipped in the solution to gently scrub from top to bottom, finally rinse the fur with a clean water spray gun, place it in a ventilated and cool place to dry, and dredge the fur in the forward direction.

4. Graying of light-colored plush

Washing solution: >90# gasoline, 25% ammonia water, ratio 1:1.

Washing solution: Put the fur on the portrait air model, use an air spray gun to evenly atomize the solution onto the fur, fully wet it for 5 minutes, use a short-bristled brush dipped in the solution to gently scrub from top to bottom, and finally rinse the fur with a clean water spray gun, place it in a ventilated and cool place to dry, and dredge and sort the fur in the forward direction.

5. Light-colored plush with dull luster

Washing solution: acetic acid (white) or glacial acetic acid, water, ratio 1:1 or 1:2.

Washing method: Put the fur on the portrait air model, use an air spray gun to evenly atomize the solution onto the fur, atomize once every 5 minutes, repeat 3-5 times, until the fur is fully moistened and in the form of water mist, let it stand for 15 minutes, then use a dry sponge to wipe and clean it from top to bottom along the fur, and place it in a ventilated and cool place to dry.

6. Fur aging treatment

Washing solution: alum, salt, softener, water, ratio 2:1:1:300, water temperature 40-50℃, common amount: 100 grams of alum, 50 grams of salt, 50 grams of softener, 1500 grams of soft water.

Washing method: Soak the fur in the solution for 15-20 minutes to allow it to fully penetrate the leather, rub it with moderate force, and brush the leather repeatedly with a brown brush, rinse it with clean water, and place it in a ventilated and cool place to dry.

7. Slight hardening of fur

Washing solution: vinegar essence (white), salt, water, ratio of 1:1:15 (solution mixing preparation), water temperature 35-40℃, common dosage: 100 grams of vinegar essence, 100 grams of salt, 1500 grams of soft water.

Washing method: Soak the fur in the solution for 30-60 minutes to allow it to fully penetrate the leather. Use a brown-bristle brush dipped in the solution to repeatedly scrub the leather, rub it evenly, place it in a ventilated and cool place to dry, then spread the fur flat on the washboard and stretch it with a temperature-controlled iron at 80-85°C.

8. Severe hardening of fur

Washing solution: saltpeter, indica rice powder, water, ratio of 2:1:3 (dissolve and mix), water temperature 35-40℃. Usual amount: 1000 grams of saltpeter, 500 grams of indica rice powder, 1500 grams of soft water.

Washing method: Spread the fur flat on the washing table, first use a spray gun to evenly spray 40-45℃ hot water on the leather to moisten it, then use a brown bristle brush to repeatedly brush the solution until the solution completely penetrates into the leather, let it stand for 2-3 hours, place it in a ventilated and cool place to half dry, rub the leather repeatedly and evenly, and put it into a drum washing machine to soften it.

Conditions: temperature 42°C, humidity 65%, low speed forward and reverse, time 25 minutes.
