Precautions for hypoglycemia

Precautions for hypoglycemia

Hypoglycemia is a common condition in life. It is mainly caused by a lack of iron. In addition, an unbalanced diet is also a cause of hypoglycemia. Therefore, patients with hypoglycemia should pay attention to their diet, not overwork, and eat more blood-replenishing foods. Patients with hypoglycemia should not stay up late, eat small meals frequently, or be exposed to the sun for a long time. You can learn about this.

Hypoglycemia precautions

1. Eat small, frequent meals

It is best for patients with hypoglycemia to eat small meals frequently, about 6 to 8 meals a day. Eating a small snack or refreshment before bed can also help. In addition, alternate food types and avoid eating certain foods too often, as allergies are often related to hypoglycemia. Food allergies will exacerbate the condition and make symptoms more complicated.

2. Eat a balanced diet

The diet should be balanced, containing at least 50-60% carbohydrates (the same dietary principles as diabetics), including vegetables, brown rice, avocado, konjac, seeds, nuts, cereals, lean meat, fish, yogurt, and raw cheese.

3. Foods that should be restricted

Strictly limit your intake of simple sugars and try to eat less refined and processed products (for example, instant rice and potatoes), white flour, soda, alcohol, and salt. Avoid fruits and juices that are high in sugar (for example, grape juice mixed with 50% water). Also eat less macaroni, noodles, gravy, white rice, corn chips, and sweet potatoes. Beans and potatoes can be eaten twice a week.

4. Increase high-fiber diet

A high-fiber diet helps stabilize blood sugar levels. When blood sugar is low, you can combine fiber with protein foods (for example, bran pancakes with raw cheese or almond jam). Eat fresh apples instead of applesauce. The fiber in apples can inhibit blood sugar fluctuations. You can also add a glass of juice to quickly increase blood sugar concentration. Fiber itself can also slow down the drop in blood sugar. Take cellulose half an hour before meals to stabilize blood sugar. Taking spirulina tablets between meals can further stabilize blood sugar levels.

5. Quit smoking and drinking

Alcohol, caffeine and smoking will seriously affect the stability of blood sugar, so it is best to quit or use them less.

Symptoms of hypoglycemia

1. Sympathetic nervous system excitement

After hypoglycemia occurs, adrenaline secretion is stimulated to increase, and hypoglycemia syndrome may occur. This is a compensatory reaction of hypoglycemia. Patients have pale complexion, palpitations, cold limbs, cold sweats, trembling hands, weak legs, general fatigue, dizziness, blurred vision, hunger, panic and anxiety, etc., which are relieved after eating.

2. Symptoms of impaired consciousness

The cerebral cortex is inhibited, consciousness is hazy, orientation and recognition are decreased, drowsiness, sweating, tremor, memory loss, headache, apathy, depression, dream-like state, dementia in severe cases, and some people may have strange behaviors. These neuropsychiatric symptoms are often mistaken for mental disorders.

3. Symptoms of epilepsy

When hypoglycemia develops to the point where the midbrain is affected, it can lead to increased muscle tone, resulting in paroxysmal convulsions and epilepsy.

4. Symptoms of involvement of the pyramidal tract and extrapyramidal system

When the subcortical center is inhibited, the patient will be confused, restless, hypersensitive to pain, have clonic chorea, dilated pupils, and even tonic convulsions. Extrapyramidal and pyramidal tract signs are positive, and symptoms may include hemiplegia, mild paresis, aphasia, and monoplegia.

5. Symptoms of cerebellar involvement

Hypoglycemia can damage the cerebellum, causing symptoms such as ataxia, incoordination, poor distance perception, low muscle tone and abnormal gait, especially in the late stage of hypoglycemia, which often leads to ataxia and dementia.
