Is water-based paint really non-toxic?

Is water-based paint really non-toxic?

Usually when we decorate things, we use various paints. This kind of paint can add bricks and tiles to our house, but at the same time it will also cause many problems. Many people say that water-based paint is toxic, but in fact many paints contain toxins, but the amount of poison is whether it is serious or mild, etc. Patients need to pay special attention to this aspect.

shortcoming

1. Water-based paint has high requirements for the cleanliness of the material surface during the construction process. Because the surface tension of water is large, dirt can easily cause shrinkage holes in the coating film;

2. Water-based paint has poor dispersion stability against strong mechanical forces. When the flow rate in the delivery pipeline changes dramatically, the dispersed particles are compressed into solid particles, causing pitting on the coating film. The conveying pipeline is required to be in good shape and have no defects on the pipe wall.

3. Water-based paint is highly corrosive to coating equipment, and anti-corrosion lining or stainless steel materials are required, which results in high equipment costs. Water-based paints can corrode delivery pipes, dissolve metals, cause the dispersed particles to precipitate, and produce pitting on the coating, so stainless steel pipes are also needed.

4. Baking water-based paint has strict requirements on construction environment conditions (temperature and humidity), which increases the investment in temperature and humidity control equipment and also increases energy consumption.

5. The latent heat of evaporation of water is large, and the energy consumption of baking is high. Cathodic electrophoretic paint needs to be baked at 180°C; while latex paint takes a long time to completely dry.

6. Organic solvents with high boiling points produce a lot of fumes during baking, which condense and drip onto the surface of the coating, affecting the appearance.

performance

(1) Poor pigment dispersion.

Water-based paint belongs to a polymer dispersion system, and the pigment dispersion is not very good, so measures must be taken to improve it.

(2) The stability of dispersed particles is poor.

Dissolved molecules are very stable to shear force, heat, pH, etc., while dispersed particles are unstable, so stabilization measures must be taken for the dispersed system. Dispersed particles will be destroyed by shear force, so it is necessary to consider avoiding the effect of shear force during the manufacturing and transportation of water-based paint. Dispersed particles are very sensitive to pH value. Mixing acidic substances into the paint will form acidic particles, which will cause gelation and destroy the water-based paint. In addition, the dispersed particles of water-based paint will be destroyed if it is exposed to cold and frozen during transportation.
