Where should I use moxibustion for vomiting

Vomiting is a common phenomenon in life. Many women will experience nausea and vomiting when they have pregnancy reactions. Some people with stomach diseases and poor digestion will also experience nausea and vomiting. Some people even vomit due to motion sickness. In fact, moxibustion can be used to treat vomiting. Moxibustion can be used on the abdomen. So which acupoint should be moxibustioned for vomiting?

1. Location of acupuncture points for vomiting

Zhongwan: In the upper abdomen, on the anterior midline, 4 inches above the umbilicus.

Neiguan: On the palm side of the forearm, on the line connecting Quze and Daling, 2 inches above the transverse wrist crease, between the palmaris longus tendon and the radial flexor carpi tendon.

Zusanli: 3 inches below the Dubi point, one finger width outside the anterior crest of the tibia.

Zhongfu: On the upper and outer side of the anterior chest wall, 6 inches lateral to the anterior midline, 1.5 inches directly below the edge of the clavicle, at the level of the first intercostal space.

Dazhui: On the posterior midline, in the depression below the spinous process of the 7th cervical vertebra.

Fengmen: On the back, 1.5 inches lateral to the spinous process of the second thoracic vertebra.

Jianli: In the upper abdomen, on the anterior midline, 3 inches above the navel.

Shenque: the center of the navel.

Yinlingquan: in the depression below the medial condyle of the tibia.

Spleen Shu: On the back, 1.5 inches lateral to the spinous process of the eleventh thoracic vertebra.

Guanyuan: In the lower abdomen, on the anterior midline, 3 inches below the navel.

Shenshu: On the back, 1.5 inches lateral to the spinous process of the second lumbar vertebra.

Water: In the upper abdomen, on the anterior midline, 1 inch above the navel.

Fenglong: On the anterior and lateral side of the calf, the midpoint of the line connecting the outer knee pit and the outer ankle tip, one horizontal finger away from the Tiaokou point.

San Jiao Shu: On the back, 1.5 inches lateral to the spinous process of the first lumbar vertebra.

2. Moxibustion for vomiting caused by external evil attacking the stomach

Main symptoms: sudden vomiting, accompanied by fever, chills, headache, body pain, chest and abdominal fullness, and white tongue coating.

Moxibustion therapy: moxibustion on Zhongwan, Neiguan, Zusanli, Weishu, Zhongfu, Dazhui and Fengmen acupoints.

Acupoint selection position: The patient lies on his back with his knees bent. Zhongwan, Neiguan and Zusanli points are selected. In the supine position, moxibustion is added to Zhongfu. In the prone position, moxibustion is added to Dazhui and Fengmen points.

Moxibustion technique: Use moxa sticks for gentle moxibustion. Light the moxa sticks, place the index fingers on both sides of the selected acupoints in one hand, and hold the moxa roll with the other hand and suspend it vertically on the skin of the selected acupoints, 3-4 cm away from the skin. The degree of warmth should be felt by the patient until there is a burning sensation. If it feels too hot, you can move it in a spiral to ensure continuous warmth stimulation. Moxibustion each acupoint for 5-10 minutes, then lie prone and gently moxibustion 2 pairs of stomach points for 5-10 minutes, using the same moxibustion method as above.

Moxibustion effects: relieving exterior symptoms and clearing turbidity.

3. Food stagnation type vomiting

Main symptoms: vomiting of sour and rotten taste, abdominal distension, belching and loss of appetite, relief after vomiting, thick and greasy tongue coating.

Moxibustion therapy: moxibustion on Zhongwan, Neiguan, Zusanli, Jianli, Shenque, Yinlingquan, and Pishu points.

Acupoint selection and posture: The patient lies on his back with his knees bent, and Zhongwan, Neiguan, and Zusanli points are selected. In the supine position, Jianli, Shenque, and Yinlingquan points are additionally moxibustioned. In the prone position, Pishu point is additionally moxibustioned.

Moxibustion technique: Use moxa cones and ginger to moxibustion each acupoint. Take fresh old ginger, cut ginger slices into 0.2-0.5 cm thick slices according to the location of the acupoint, puncture several holes in the middle, and when moxibustion, place the fresh ginger slices on the skin of the selected acupoints, place the moxa cone on it over high heat, light the moxa cone with fire and perform moxibustion. When the patient feels a local burning pain, slightly lift the ginger slices, or change the moxa cone and moxibustion again. Moxibustion each acupoint 3-5 times.

Moxibustion effects: helps digestion, relieves stagnation, soothes the stomach and relieves reflux.
